Where would we be if not for folks who do the impossible because the were never told or never believed prevailing wisdom.

There was a book I leafed through once called "The Physics of Star Trek" written by some physics doctorate who basically spent the while thing saying everything they did was impossible so why bother watching or trying. And all I kept thinking was all the thinks that current wisdom had said were impossible in their day, like planes, trains, moving faster than 30mph or so, and so on. In the 1890s they looked at closing the patent office since "there was nothing left to invent". Yet look at all the stuff in the last 120 years.
 
That's pretty cool! Just as long as they don't park on the dark side of the moon they should be ok! :highly_amused: PJ
 
Fascinating, two observations though

1. does this mean hereafter space ships will be RHD?

2. British engine & electrical technology doesn't always get me to a cruise night safely - are we considering Lucas to the moon?

I saw a TV special a while back in which they chronicled all the products of today and recent years that were in some way inspired by Star Trek. For example the flip phone ( communicator), or the flat screen TV screen.

I think they talked about ion drives also. Like the one they used to crash a probe into an asteroid a couple years back.

I read the article and more relating to it yesterday and had the same thought.

Seems to me it's a superheterodyne effect of some sort.
