Back in the day I seem to remeber I could a nice scissors jack almost anywhere, now I cannot. Anyone out there have a lead on where I could find a nice wide screw type scissors jack? Thanks
For people with home machine shops it would be a nice little project. I've never seen one that has such a small collapsed height. I think this would get under the Healey even if you lost a wheel. Like THAT'S ever happened.
Any small Japanese car is a good source for a scissor jack small enough to go under an Austin-Healey. I got one from a Nissan 280ZX in a scrap yard.
The took kit looked like it had never been used and included collapsible wheel chocks too.
I bought a small GM scissor jack at Wal Mart a couple of years ago for very little $$ .
It fits very well into the boot ( along with a 12" long piece of 4x4 to drive on to with a flat if necessary. I also carry a small piece of plywood to put under the jack in case it is muddy on the side of the road.)
I've never seen one that can go down to 3 inches (less the wood you'd put against the frame). Don't forget that the tire may be flat when you need it. I use them for other things once the car is kut on jack stands.
th, ive been considering an air bladder type jack that is filled by ones exhaust system, very light weight, requires all most "0" clearance between ground and frame, stores easily, takes up little space, and no "clanging" around against other items in the boot, anyone ever use one of these?
Someone just told me theirs didn't work but it had sat in the trunk for several years. It wouldn't raise a small Toyota pick up with camper shell. We were discussing this because someone on a Healey back road trip had a flat (I believe it was Dave Nock) and I think he tried to use one too, but I'm getting this second hand. I wounder how it would work on dual exhaust?
Roger you are happy with that Jack, CUZ you have mot had to use it on the side of the road.! The jack is OK . However, the operating handle is the pits. I welded a 3/8" to 1/4" socket adapter on to mine, now I can slide it far enough under the car to jack it up with out that Hook thing floppin around in its hole.---Keoke-
 That potato response was pretty accurate too.
