Scary Handling

Recommended pressure IS a good one. You'll be amazed at the difference in the ride. Turns out the tires soak up most of the bumps! I personally run 24/26. It is important to the handling of the car to keep the rears at a higher pressure than the fronts.

As a side note, the Corvair recommended pressures different in the front than at the rear, and the failure of owners to heed that recommendation was the reason for their "bad" handling, and the hatchet job from Ralph Nader.
 
Bill, you are now running 14 inch tires if my memory serves.
On my bug-eye I'm running 165/80 13's. Can't get these anymore either but that is what the car had on it and it gears things up a bit. The old tires that were on it were XZX Michelin's with good stiff sidewall's of the same size but the tires I fitted were modern Firestone's with sidewalls the thickness of the inner tubes we used to get.
I'm running over 30psi just to keep the car from slopping from side to side in the twisty's. So I guess it's what ever work's.

BTW early Corvairs had swing axles that were killer's. Spitfires did as well and a friend of mine was nearly killed when he rolled his Spit.

What a difference the tire pressure made! With the new tires and springs, the Sprite rides and handles like a dream. I kept thinking "boy, this could be a daily driver". Even when you start pushing the car, its handling remained failry docile
