Recommended pressure IS a good one. You'll be amazed at the difference in the ride. Turns out the tires soak up most of the bumps! I personally run 24/26. It is important to the handling of the car to keep the rears at a higher pressure than the fronts.
As a side note, the Corvair recommended pressures different in the front than at the rear, and the failure of owners to heed that recommendation was the reason for their "bad" handling, and the hatchet job from Ralph Nader.
