scam Vettes

Just "did" about 8 scam Vettes on eBay. Most at one time. They have all been taken off.

There is a rash of them this week. Dozens keep appearing - and disappearing!!!

Nice Healey for $2990 right now but it will be gone soon.

It's the next wave - people are getting wise to the regular "we'll send you too much cash" scams so this is the next logical progression. You send us too little cash...

Personally I still wouldn't buy a car I couldn't see. You can pretty much get anywhere in the US for $500. Even on a 10k car that's only a 5% premium.

I got to mine today for about $25 in gas and $15 in cigarettes drinks, and breakfast at Micky D's. Oh, and there's still half a tank in both cars!

With me it isn't the travel cost that's the bother, its the potential waste of time.

In these cases you would not even go to see the car. A 1967, 427 big block Corvette in 100% award winning condition free delivery to your door at $6900????? Such an obvious scam. So obvious it is too obvious.

Some idiot named Dawn (email name) selling a perfect Healey (again) at $2990??? Are there really people who fall for this?

I had fun with one Vette. Asking price was around $7000 so I bid $499,900. Unfortunately many of these scams say approved bidding only. I have never been able to get anyone to reply saying I could bid.

So what do they want- some kind of off-system bid? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cowboy.gif

E-bay provides little enough protection to buyers even as it is.... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

They want your email address.
You'll then get a sob story about the high bidder failing to come through.

My point about the $500 was merely that if you are genuinely considering buying a car from Ebay that you could go see it for not too much, no matter where it is. I'm not advocating hopping on a plane every time you glance at an ad, more for the one you are serious about.

You then have pre-sale pictures (you'd take a camera naturally, right?) so there is no argument about any issues of condition that might arise afterwards.

I bought my TR6 through ebay btw. I drove over to look at it first though...

I bought my Volvo 850 off ebay. However, the car was at a used car dealers lot about 45 minutes from my house, so I tooled over there and checked it out first. Otherwise, I don't think I'd be comfortable buying a car off ebay sight unseen. If I was really serious about buying one I'd either buy a ticket and trip over to see it or find someone with some knowledge, either through a club or maybe here at BCF, that lived local to it and who would be willing to evaluate it for me.

Did anybody see the Aston Martin DB2/4 with the buy it now price of $5600. A friend of mine bid on it and got the pre-qualified bidders thing. I told him it was a scam. It fit the description of all the scams that Bruce points out. The e-mail response he got back asked him to take the purchase off of e-bay but asked for all of his e-bay account info. They also told him that although the e-bay add listed the car in St.Louis, it was actually in Germany. He never returned the e-mail but did report it to e-bay.

Seems like a lot of these are "in Germany". Shipping is free too!!

Just ran a bid up to almost $400,000 to ruin it for the guy and he took it off, placed it back again and blocked me bidding!!!!

Car is gone this AM anyhow. I reported it.

Bruce, somehow I get the impression you enjoy ruining it for them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif

Well just a little!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If want to have some fun run the bid up to some absurd amount.

Bruce

Thanks Bruce,

Went to outbid you,& the auction was pulled.
I miss all the really great deals.

There are dozens showing up now everywhere. Mustangs, Vettes.

eBay better get a hold of this.

Funny the last two cars I asked about seeing were in Zagreb. Moved because of work and can't get car registered now. But will ship back to me for free.

Looks like a new scam may be Katrina flooded cars. Saw pictures of two and both were immaculate. Not a speck of dirt anywhere but both flooded to the dashboards.

I was the highest bidder on a car on ebay about 3 years ago. The car was about 200 miles away, so i didnt drive up to see it. The day I went to pick it up, the car looked nothing like the one in the pictures. It was a rust bucket. I told the guy I wasn't going to buy it he said ok. When I got home that night I had a message saying if i left him bad feedback he would leave me bad feedback. I told ebay and they didnt care. So I waited 3 months to leave feedback because I knew if I waited till the last miunte hopefully he wont be able to post back. It was a gamble but it worked. i have since thn both a car and a motorcycle on ebay. Both times I went to see them. Theres was one car the owner could never let me come and see it. So I knew it had to be bad.
