Well, we have concluded the Icelandic portion of the trip and are now on a ferry heading to the Shetland Islands for the first part of UK portion. This morning saw us at the airport before 5 am - after staying at the oddest hotel i think I have ever stayed in. It was located on what used to be the US Base in Keflavik - at the end of a road at the back of an industrial park which looked like the kind of place people bring stolen cars to strip them. And the window looked out on a bunch of rusted truck junk.

will try to get pics in the next day or two. At any rate, at the airport bookstore there was a German Classic car magazine, which had an article on the first generation Pontiac Transporter. Yup, the dust buster shaped one - they are old enough to be a classic! While I couldn't read it and while Europeans and Brits seem to have a more eclectic palate when it comes to cars ( think Austin Allegros and Early 70's delta 88's) it was odd.

then, we got to Aberdeen to get to the ferry. Had a lovely flight and taxi ride into the centre of the city, found a pub with great fish and chips, went to order a pint and saw that they had Coors Light on tap! (And Carling as welll - obscure Canadian gut rot brand) so, what is this world coming to?

what made up for it was walking to the ferry dock and meeting two fellows who had taken the ferry from Shetland the night before and who had, just today, picked up a Morris 8 conertible. It was an honest driver and they were driving it into the ferry to make their way home. We had a lovely chat.

so, will try for pics in the next day or two - anyone have a better idea than photobucket?

cheers

So whats the rest of your UK itinerary JP?

what a great start! Looking forward to pics.

dont know if it's better than photobucket, but my daughter used "tumblr" when she studied abroad last year.

Enjoy your trip. When I'm on the move I feel more at ease than at home. It's a problem.

In Shetland till Sunday - fly to Aberdeen then Monday take the train to Birmingham, rent a car, drive around the southwest of England till the 5th (i think) and back to Canada from Birmingham the 6th.

If your picking a car up in Brum (Birmingham) you might want to visit the motorcycle museum before you head south. Well worth a visit. Shame your not going to be in Birmingham over the weekend. Could have arranged to meet up.

That would have been lovely - I kind of thought you were close to there, but wasn't sure.

I am hoping to catch at least one car museum - but am aware that SWMBO is somewhat less enamored so will have to figure that all out.

You could take the M40 south and pick up the British Motor Museum in Gaydon and sell it to SWMBO as being on the way to Oxford which is worth a visit. You could then cut west across country for a scenic tour through the Cotswolds and then pick up the M5 for your continued journey south. Alternatively you could skip Oxford and head down through the Cotswolds on the A429 through Morton, Stow on the Wold, the Slaughters and Bourton if you want to see some of 'old' England. You might even be able to pull in a visit to the Cotswold Motoring and Toy museum at Bourton-on-the-water.

Ooo good suggestions - will follow up! Still no luck with pictures, but gorgeous day in Shetland today! (Google Lerwick) walked down by the water, there was a sailing race coming in from Norway, a cruise ship and a tall ship! I was very excited and, as we made our way back, the General Lee drove by! Amazing!
