......As many people as there are without power and who need help, you would think that these states would welcome ANY help. Not so if you go to help in New Jersey and you're not union..... :madder:
OK, I actually <span style="text-decoration: underline">read</span> that article and here is part of what it said:
<span style="font-style: italic">"At this stage, it is not clear who is alleged to have turned the crew away and the company that employs the affected workers has denied the claim," said IBEW President Ed Hill in a statement. "IBEW local leaders in New Jersey have reiterated <span style="text-decoration: underline">what has been the long standing record of our union – in times of crisis all help is welcome and we pull together with everyone to meet the needs of the public.</span> We have communicated this to the office of New Jersey Governor Christie as well." </span>
So yes, it sounds like some unknown scam-artist did try to arm-twist them, but that hardly represents the IBEW viewpoint nor the viewpoint of people in New Jersey.
If someone believes scammmers are unique to New Jersey, I have a bridge to sell you.
Nial, I actually read the article too! The problem is, the article you read is not the same article I read. It seems to have changed from when I posted the link.
For example, it now starts off with "A Decatur Utilities crew left Alabama to help with storm recovery in New Jersey, but did not make the trip because of what they are <span style="text-decoration: underline">now calling confusion</span> over union paperwork."
When I originally posted the article, the first few sentences read like this:
<span style="font-style: italic">SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY - The hurricane-ravaged east coast has been receiving north Alabama help, but crews from Huntsville Utilities learned they'll be doing work in Long Island, New York instead of in New Jersey.
Crews from Huntsville, as well as Decatur Utilities and Joe Wheeler out of Trinity headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees.</span>
The article originally did not say anything about "now calling confusion" when I originally posted it, it was just a statement that the workers had been turned away because they were not union.
Glad to see the clarification, but please don't infer that I didn't read the article, or that I'm trying to mislead. I was reacting to what was originally in the article. I don't recall seeing the statement you quoted when I originally posted the link either. Also, the title of the article has changed as well from what I recollect when I originally posted it. If it read that way originally I probably would not have bothered to post it.
Sometimes the media gets it wrong the first time.
And Tom - I'm not condemning anyone bud, although I appreciate your concern and actually share it. The article read differently originally.
