Does or has anyone live(d) in San Jose? I have a job offer there and just curious to hear opinions of how it is to live there? (I know housing is very expensive..)

thanks for any insight..

Can't beat San Jose...
cept maybe Santa Barbara

One of my brothers lived there for about 3 years. He kept angling for the rest us sibling (six of us) to move there. Eventually, he moved back east, but he always seems to regret leaving.
It's a lovely town. A high school friend of mine has lived all over the world and lives outside SJ right now. He says it the best place on the planet.
But yes: house prices make New Jersey look inexpensive!

Housing cost out there will make Florida look like heaven. So will bread.

If you have any guns, leave 'em here with me. I'll keep 'em safe until ya come to your senses and return back home. :jester:

What are you saying Doc?
Quit beating around the bush!

Just my unsolicited opinion.

Keep in mind I'm a Floridian by transplant, had to get here on my own.

After thirty-some years I figger I'm a naturalized Florida redneck. The curmudgeon in me comes out when Kalifornia is part of a discourse, too.

How's your CoL up there, Don? State income taxes? Sales tax rate?

Still haven't figured all that out yet
There are so many different taxes for different things

One thing that you will find is that the bay area is a LOT drier than Florida and you won't need your de-humidifier. The temps can get down to the low 40's and we even had ICE in our birdbath once in January (in Los Altos but it is very close). If you are like any normal person who works in San Jose you will probably live in Sunol or Pleasanton (or Tracy) unless you put your entire family in a studio apartment. Livermore is nice too but the commute traffic is horrible and it is often an hour from Sunol into San Jose so use that as a guide as to how far out you live (Tracy is about 2 commute hours away)

I lived in Santa Clara and San Jose for about four years.
Was a non stop party, drugs, drink and etc.
It's very similar to the Los Angeles area.
Millions of reasons for me to avoid being in either place.

Thanks for the input guys.. Still weighing the decision and waiting back to hear the offer I get. Steve, I am not a partier, so I think I would be ok...

It does look like there are a lot of outdoor activities there.

Wait, FL has humidity problems? who knew... I have lived here my whole life, I don't know what no humidity would be like! lol.

If you like living in a big city,& crazy, fast drivers (try driving highway 280 sometime),
you'll probably like it.Also check out the crime statistics sometime.
On the plus side - there's some GREAT backroads West & Northwest of there, plus
Laguna Seca & Sears Point aren't too far away.

Born and raised in FL here, and currently living in the greater Los Angeles area. I know politics is not an allowed topic of discussion. So, I'll leave out details, but it needs to be a point of consideration. If you aren't liberal, and pay politics any mind, things will drive you batty out here (even if you consider yourself middle of the road). This past election every single tax hike was approved. If you're earning over $48k/yr, expect to give up 4 - 10% to income tax (depending on marital status), and to give up 7.25 - 9.75% to sales tax (depending on municipality). For more details you may want to have a glance at California's "Franchise Tax Board" schedule:

Income tax:
https://www.ftb.ca.gov/forms/2012_California_Tax_Rates_and_Exemptions.shtml

If the taxes don't bother you and you don't pay politics no mind... it isn't so bad out here.

That said, i'm about ready to head back east....

And watch out - you might end up with an endless amount of useless tattoos, that will make much less desirable in the job market.

Weather will get a little colder than Florida, but you also have ski mountains within 2 hours. My daughter lives next door in Santa Clara, Very nice area. Some parts of San Jose are not as fancy as the rest of silicon valley but your will see that in any large town. Yes, the cost of housing is HIGH, sales tax just goes up 0.5% to about 8% (depends on your county). Income tax is progressive, 0-11% although they could have go an increase in for the rich folk on the last ballot.
People live in CA for the weather, same as in Florida. The traffic in the bay area is major, just like any very large spread out city.

The good news, you can come to our car show in May!!! Lots of active car clubs in the area.
