Saga of the new lawnmower

Our lawnmower of 17 years finally got to the point where it wasn't worth continuing to put money in to keep it going. We decided it was finally time for a new mower. After some reseach and checking what was available locally, I decided to get a 22" Toro "Recycler." Home Depot had it on sale for $289.00, but they had the same model at the Base Exchange for $279.00 (and no tax). So, I went to the BX and told the guy in the lawn and garden department I wanted "that" mower (pointing to the floor display model with the "$279.00 Sale" tag on it.

So, the fellow goes over to where several mowers were sitting in boxes and puts a box that said "Toro Recycler" on a cart. But I noticed there was a price on the box of $399.99, so I asked "are you sure that's the right mower?" He said "ya, it was on sale, but the sale ended Thursday - but I'll give you this price since the tag was still on the floor model." I thought to myself that $120 was a heck of a savings!

So I get home, unpack the mower, put it together, put oil and gas in it and start it up to try it out. After I started mowing the yard, I started to wonder if this was really the same model that was on the floor for $279? I happened to have taken a picture of the floor model with my iPhone so I could show Mary. I pulled out my iPhone and looked at the picture I had taken! Ah ha! The floor model that was on sale was a manual push model, but what I was now mowing my lawn with was a self-propelled model called "Personal Pace!" No wonder it was $399.99! I realized the young guy at the BX had sold me a much more expensive model!

Well, I really liked this self-propelled mower and the way it would move exactly at the pace you wanted to walk (hence "personal pace'). But my danged conscience wouldn't let me keep this mower that I just got at a "steal" becuase I'd feel like I really was stealing and the young guy who made the mistake would probably have his paycheck docked. So I called the BX and talked to the manager and explained that I wanted to keep the self-propelled mower but I wanted to pay what it really cost and not get away with a "steal" that was clearly an honest mistake.

The next day I took my receipt back to the BX to pay the difference for the mower and was happy to learn that the manager decided to give me 10% off the price of the self-propelled mower, which was within her discretion to do. So, I go a better mower and paid a little more, but still got $40 off the price, so even though I didn't get a "steal" I still got a pretty good deal.

FWIW. I also just bought a Toro and really like the Personal Pace feature.

refreshing Honesty. Good on ya boss!
But I take issue with a 17 year old mower being not worth fixing.
My daily mower is a 1971 John Deere. Runs beautifully.
In the stable is also a 1969 Lawn-Boy currently being restored, and a 1951 Toro Sport-Lawn that comes out on occasion for fun.

Bought a $650 82 gallon water heater at Lowes last year. It took an awful long time to get the huge box down from the top shelf. The manager came over and said to me "just tell them at check-out I said to take 25 off since I had to wait"
I get to the check-out and tell the young man the manager said to take "25 off".... You guessed it... the kid took <span style="font-weight: bold">25% off</span>. I called the manager over to explain and he thanked me for not walking out with it and also gave me 10% off.

That Lawn Boy was one I considered an implement of torture as a kid. :jester:

That reel mower brought back memories of my stepdad's Rocket mower dragging me all over the lawn. That dude could pull stumps, I believe!

I'm fairly certain that in California, the Department of Labor prevents an employer from docking an employee for a mistake. Don't know how it is where you are. Employers sometime do try to screw over the employee and they can always threaten to fire someone for no cause but I think it is illegal to take financial action against and employee by state labor statute.

I know what you're saying; heck, that's what this whole Forum is about, isn't it?

But there are times when enough is enough. For a couple decades, I had a Toro Whirlwind mower that eventually paralleled the legendary George Washington axe. It had had a total of three decks and was on its second engine when said engine spit its guts onto the side lawn! Sadly, the next Toro didn't last nearly as long, but the current one seems to be hanging in there pretty well in its seventh season....

I will say, though, that there are times when I think I'd rather have your '51 Toro!

I also have a Toro with the personal pace feature, bought in Florida for St Augustine Grass - we now have about 750 square feet of grass - mowing the lawn takes about 10 minutes.

This isn't California.

Best mower I ever had was a 20" Lawnboy we bought used for $75 back when we were first married!

And even in New Mexico, it's Federal.

Them old mowers....wash out the underside after each use, they'll stay together. Forget, usually in 2 years the base is GONE or rapidly departing.

Can my employer dock my paycheck as a penalty?

"If you are paid hourly, then it is pretty easy for your employer to dock your paycheck. The biggest limitation on this practice is that the deductions cannot drop your pay below the federal minimum wage."
