Rust Treatments: Por15 vs Rust Bullet

Does anyone have any experience with Rust Bullet . It claims to have much less surface prep than por15 and the astm? test results were about the same. I would appreciate any feedback comparing it to POR15 or what ever product you feel is best for protecting those hard to get to "hidden" places(eg: TR4 "B" post)

I have used Rust Bullet on my 78 B and the 80 Spit in the last 2 years. The stuff seems to do what it says and sets up hard as a rock. I applied it over surface rust on the floor of the Spit and after 2 coats the surface is now nice and smooth, on the B I applied it over new floorpans and in the boot. I have used Por-15 also on my Mustang about 10 years ago and it has worked well also. Only time will tell how effective Rust Bullet is but after about 2 years it seems that it has stopped the spread of rust and no old rust has repopped through the coating. RB also works well as a primer to bare metal and accepts a topcoat very well, just dont get any on your skin as it takes about a week to wear it off. If sprayed instead of brushed it has a nice metallic silver finish that can be used on suspension or under bonnet parts without topcoating if you want them silver.
 
Just curious. How do these products hold up to something like brake cleaner?

Curiosity aroused as I run two race cars and one would not believe how much oil film (they are LBCs after all) and dirt these cars can pick up, especially in the suspension components, in a single weekend! It seems the best way to clean these areas of the race cars is to hit them with copious amounts of brake cleaner. Of course "normal" paints do not handle this well at all.

So, I'm looking for something that I can apply this winter while the cars undergo disassembly and off season maintenance.

Paul: Thanks for sharing your experiences! I've got some coming and while start by using it on my truck bumper after I sandblast it. We'll see how that goes. Aren't all of us British car owners looking for the best rust treatment around... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif
UV TEST
look at panels #6 and #8. Rustbullet (#6) shows nothing, while por15 (#8) shows some sign of degrading.

The saltwater test was the most telling IMO.

Interesting results of those tests. And I just painted my Chevy dump truck differential and rear axel etc with Hammerite. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif It was the best I could get here since shipping POR 15 would be expensive and it is not UV potected, which I really need. Conditions for ther truck itself are not that bad so I think the Hammerite will be Ok for a long time. I will look into Rustbullet though. Sure looks like the better of the lot
 
Well I have yet to get to the truck bumper. I wanted to find a real challenge for this stuff: "black pipe".

I ran gas about 3 yrs ago, and have about 20 feet of it connecting the meter, pool heater, and gas grill together before it runs inside the home. As you guys know, this pipe rusts almost instantly. I brushed "rust bullet" on the entire exterior run. I brushed it right over the rust like they claim you can do. Between its southern exposure to light and my wife's flower watering it should really take some abuse.

I'll keep you posted on its performance, in a year or two:smile:

Where do you buy "Rust Bullet"?
 
An alternative good product is Rust Encapsulator sold by The Eastwood Company - Comes in Red, grey and black, is a little less expensive as POR 15 and they advertise it is not UV sensitive like " Some Leading Brands" Plus, they've a wonderful selection of all sorts of tools - check em' out!
