Running hot/Overheating

There's a discussion on the email list about the necessity/value of fitting an oil cooler. General consensus is not really necessary/helpful, but it sounds like you'd want one in Andrea's circumstances (but I'll bet all the other stuff done to aid cooling helped quite a bit). Someone mentioned a heat exchanger that split a seam, and I've heard of hoses bursting, but pretty much every light aircraft has one and reliability is something of an issue when airborne. Also, most aircraft have a 'Vernatherm,' which prevents oil from circulating through the exchanger until it reaches a suitable running temperature. I've not seen one for cars, though.

Came across this:

Hey Bob , Hope your day is going great . I'm not sure your healey has an oil cooler or not but if you were to buy an oil cooler kit today , What make and model kit would you buy ?
Thanks , BobbyR

I have a "vernatherm" cold oil bypass valve on my oil cooler installation in the BN2. When I was looking at adapter plates to install I found one with a built in thermo valve. Of late, I have not seen them and the adapter Moss sells does not seem to have that feature. Although, probably not needed where I am in CA, my aviation background said yes, this is a good idea. I forget the temperature it starts sending oil to the cooler but I've had no installation problems. My idle oil pressure is usually a tad above 40 psi and I suspect that is due to having the cooler.

Hey Bob , Thanks for tip on the moss kit . I've seen these before . I'm just hoping it's solid enough to do the job .
Thanks again , BobbyR
