Rumble in rear axle

Finally putting some miles on my BJ7 and I'm getting a rumble out of the rear axle when I accelerate, or when the car is under a load (uphill). Can't determine by just listening whether it is a wheel bearing, carrier bearing, ring/pinion issues,or perhaps rear u-joint. Any suggestions for troubleshooting this further? I'm reluctant to put the car on jack stands and run it in gear for obvious safety reasons.

Check the U joints for wear/--Keoke

make sure that the nuts holding the axels in place diddn't come loose mine did and whe wheel almost came off and your going to lose all the diff oil

I had a BN6 and got a rumble or gear noise on load from the rear end and no gear noise when not under load. Turned out to be the pinion bearing on the differential. Do not know if it was the front or rear bearing as was not severe enough to replace but you might check that area as well as what has already been recommended. Good time to do it when you might have the drive shaft out to check the U joints since have to disconnect it at the diff end to get to the pinion oil seals and bearings.
Good luck,
Mike

Think simple!! Check hub nuts for looseness and all rear suspension bolts and joints.

Sounds like good advice all around. The frequency of the rumble is fairly high, which suggests something upstream from the ring gear; pinion bearing, u joint, etc. Has anybody tried a mechanic's stethoscope through the rear seat opening to localize pinion bearing problems?

No, but I had a squeek and and odd bang from the rear, turned out to be the shocker bolts needed tightening, We could not determine that with the seats out, it was trial and error in the end.

If the shock bolts needed tightening most likely the frame mounting holes are oval shaped if run that way for any lenthg of time. Mine were. I kept tightening and they kept loosening.
