RSS Feeds

How many of you know what RSS Feeds are on web sites? The reason I ask is, I have the capability to set up RSS feeds on forums here (althought it would only be on certain forums) but wanted to get a feel for how many folks even know what RSS feeds are or how to use them>

Basil

I do. I have a custom google "homepage" with several RSS feeds showing up on it from different news services and forums.

There are lots of different ways to get RSS feeds, like using an email program that supports it - but the google homepage setup is about the easiest and quickest way to make it work with just opening your web browser. It puts everything in one place, on one page. Or, if you prefer, you can set up "tabs" on the homepage and have different subjects on different tabbed pages - but the content is gathered from anywhere you want.

I looked it up on Wikipedia, and I'm still not clear what it is. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

I run an RSS feed from the BBC.

I use that plus the Storm Prediction Center and get my footie results. This new IE 7 does a great job of organizing them.

/bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif Nary a clue.

Thanks Scott,
I guess Iโ€™m too fickle with what information I read that I wouldnโ€™t use it. Not to say Iโ€™m protesting having it put on the forum, some people may love it. Who knows, I may too. I reserve the right to change my mind.

I use them to watch a few sites, they can certainly be handy. If it wasn't too much trouble to set up, it might be worth a try. We're pretty active here, though, and I find RSS the most useful for sites that I'm not visiting hourly.

Not that I do that here...

Okay, I'm in denial. I do that some days...

That's how I use them, too, and that triggered a thought. Whenever I've added an RSS feed (or a "live link" using RSS) then my site visits have dropped probably 90%. Would using RSS on the BCF for, say, some of the more active forums cause RSS users to stop looking at the site itself? Just a thought.

Good point, Yes, it probably would, which is why I would probably not implement RSS on the main forums, just on some of the less-traveled like Forum Happenings and Annoucements, etc.

I could certainly see it for those admin forums. I don't always remember to check them, and it becomes a nice way to announce when you've got official info that needs to get out.

So is THAT the column on the right provided by google that keeps my forum page narrower than it could be?? I didn't know it had a name!! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

A train forum I'm on has RSS feeds for it's news forum. Often times press releases from railroads come through, etc.

I think it'd be a good idea for important forum announcements as well. I'm probably the worst when it comes to checking those forums.

I think most of us don't know what you are talking about Basil. Can you put it on one part so we can see and evaluate this modern technology. Heck can it be put on the PUB?
