rpm's [ Typical Idle RPM ]

is there a rule of thumb as where the tach should be when idling and, for that matter, in each gear?

I idle between 600 and 800 RPMs. When it gets real hot, the idle drops - and sometimes stalls if I don't pull the choke out in time. I believe I am about 3000 RPMs at 60 MPH

AS a rule of thumb I think you will find most Healey Tachs positioned around the 1000 RPM mark at idle. Which generally corrosponds to a reading of 600-To-800 RPM when checked against my Pensky analyzer. In each gear just stay out of the Red Line. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif-Fwiw---Keoke

Since the SU carbs do not have temperature comphensation,when the engine reaches its full runing temperature [HOT] the Idle speed generally increases rather than decreasing.In my cars I set the Idle speed about 200 RPM low at a running temp around 160 Deg F,which requires that I run on choke for a short period to maintain a steady 800 RPM Idle. This has been my experience with all hot runing engines equipped with SU carbs. Consequently, you may want to have a look at your overall tuning and see if your car will respond accordingly-FWIW---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif
