I know this is not the best place to post this but here goes anyway. What is the difference between a 3.9 38D engine and other Rover engines OTHER than bore and stroke? I have found a place that has used 3.9 38D engines for $599. https://www.motorcarsltd.com/land-rover-salvage-parts/range-rover-3-9-engine.asp

I'm looking at a Land Rover with a bad engine and thought cheap engine replacement might be the way to go. I really don't know why I want to do this. I have PLENTY on my plate now, just want to get it out of my head.

You can get low compression 3.9 engines & high compression engines...you want the high compression engine which is a bit harder to find.

Why? I know the hi compression engine is more desirable for horsepower, but I'm looking at just getting one running for a little while then trading or selling it and make a buck or two.

The site I have listed says it will not FIT. Does that mean the bolt pattern is different or does it mean it won't fit in it's current configuration and you will have to swap some parts around? I'd like to know before I try anything.

There were so many variations put in the different vehicles that its beyond my ability to figure which will fit....a salvage yard should be able to cross reference which will fit your vehicle.

the p38 is the rover engine from the 94-99 RR and disco2.
the 4.0 (or 3.9 as some call it) is the same as in my 8 - I assume from your sig that's what its going in so it will physically fit.

Sorry Tony, I didn't mean for you to try an exact cross reference. I was thinking they might be like small block Chevy and Fords. There might be hundreds of variants that might not "fit" but the long block is a virtual bolt in. I reallly appreciate the info you have given me. :thankyousign:

Give me the info on your car & I can get the engine info...my friend who owns a foreign car salvage yard has several Rover V-8's...around $800 or so, I think.

If my memory serves me right, the L/R block had a beefed up bottom end that the sedan variants dont have
