Rover 5-Speed Gearbox

Hi all, I have an MGB-GT V8 (original, factory-produced that way), that has had a gearbox swap to the Rover 5-speed that was used in the Rover cars with that same 3.5-liter Rover V8 engine. I'm looking for a source for a similar, rebuilt gearbox to replace mine. Other than getting one from overseas, which would probably entail sticker-shock shipping charges, does anyone know of a source for these? Thanks.

I'm confused.....do you have a REAL V8 (one built by & at the factory) or a conversion done later? If its a factory V-8, we'd really like to see some photos - heck, I'd like to see photos even if its a conversion.

However, those transmissions are pretty common - every TR-8 had one as did many TR-7's (my V8 conversion uses one from a TR-8)....I'd contact one of the Triumph vendors.

Hi Tony,

It's a factory job -- a REAL one -- imported from England last year with RHD and all. It's pretty much original except that someone transplanting a slightly ailing Rover 5-speed into it.

I did attach a photo to my first post, although not of the engine bay. The engine bay is currently showing the "exploded view" as it is undergoing an "engine compartment detail" -- so it's not very photogenic right now.

Thanks for the tip about TRs. I'll check in on the Triumph board.

Hey, you gotta be somebody to get people to look at your posts on this board?!?! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Only 22 views as of this morning, and only three of them even bothered to download the photo I attached -- so hardly anyone here wants to see a rare MG? Maybe I should have made my subject line something more informational such as "Holy Crap!" or "It's Alive!" or "New Here" I guess. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

But I'm not bitter... just a bit mystified. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif And after all, I did get a good tip. Thanks again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

I looked at the photo & definitely want to see the engine compartment - even if not finished

Well for folks to look it depends when you post. Most of the posting seems to be in morning, noon, and evening earlyish.

Any way we knew you from the big Healey board and thought you had gotten lost.

I may be lost, but I'm making great time. Actually I have a pretty diverse garage: Healey of course, MG, Jag, Porsche, and a Jeep to drive around picking up parts.

hehehe... I've got a few to go to catch up - nice collection!

Nice GT V8. I'm jealous.

I'm attaching a not-very-good photo of the engine bay. This was taken before things started coming out for the detailing. The car is 10 miles from here at a friend's shop, so it's not handy for grabbing a current photo.

That 3.5-liter Rover V8 produces about 150 hp, and that's as much as a Mark III Healey. It scoots! Pulls uphill nicely, too. And the sound... OH YEAH! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

I admit that I missed the first attachement, too, but I bet a lot of people did at 5 am...until you mention that there was an attachment, it is easy to miss them...nice car! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
And welcome to the MG side /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif

Nice engine shot!

Now, tell me how you went about importing it - or did you just say it was an MGB GT?

It's a GT... I like the little red Alfa behind it in the pic! I wish I could get some of those headlight covers for mine, but the italian idiots changed the sheetmetal around the headlights around 1981 or 82.

I know its a GT, I'm just wondering if he imported it as a regular GT or went through the paperwork to get a V8 GT into country...because if he got it in as just a regular GT then I can get an RV8 in as a regular MGB!

There was a guy at the dayton car show with an RV8. I didn't ask how he got it here.

I'm guessing he had a pretty decent knock-off of an RV8, not the real deal.

I've never seen an RV8 other this one and pictures, but I do not see how it could have been anything else.

You can get every part to put on an MGB except you can't do away with the vent windows unless you find RV8 doors - & the RV8 windshield frame is 1000 pounds Sterling - not weight.

When you finally get yours Tony, I want to go for a ride!

Hmmm, I don't remember about the doors or the windshield. Everything looked like it belonged. Bummer, I wish I had taken pictures. That is going to irritate me now.

It's old enough that it is not required to meet emissions or safety standards. It's a 1974; that's the latest year that can be so imported. Nothing to it.

That is also why we are being flooded with old Minis in the USA. They can now be imported (if they are model year 1974 or earlier), and so several people are bringing them in by the boat load.

All perfectly legal.
