By the way, those old rotary engines did not have a carb or throttle. They ran full speed all the time (fuel was sprayed into the "manifold". The hollw crank shaft served as part of this manifold).
To "throttle" the engine, the pilot shut the igniton on and off....."blipping" the engine for landing.
These engines had a total-loss lubrication system that used castor oil mixed with the gasoline. The choking exhaust fumes covered the pilot with oil and often lead to persistent diarrhoea as well!
