Rotten Dash Top Wood

A number of you had responded to my post about refinishing my BN7 dash top. It was the info that I needed to tackle the project. To my discovery, the ends of the top piece of wood are all rotted. It's disintigrating in my hands. Now what? Do I have to recreate the wooden top section myself, or can I find it through a supplier?

HI BRK'N 80, Yes you can find the dash tops through suppliers. However, using the old rotten one as a template and a little patience it is also possible to make one. This latter method is the most economical one.---Fwiw---Keoke

brakin80,you can buy half sheets of 1/2" plywood,if thats what its made from?as mentioned here earlier use the old one as a templet, and cut it out with a jig saw[borrow one if you dont have one]or a home dept.$29.00 special.keoke, this is the fifth one ive heard about in one week, might be time to start a new line! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Brakin,

Heritage Upholstry supplies these fully trimmed for about $280.00. I'm doing a restoration on a '60 BT7 and may have to go that route since after checking my padded dash found that there was no wooden piece inside so I have nothing to go by.

Good Luck,

Kurt

keoke,as per kurts100-6th one, lets see plywood [if thats what its made from?]$20.00,padding-$6.00,covering-$15.00,glue-$1.00,staples-$.45=$42.45,-shipping$37.55 =$200.00 left over, hum, just let me know what color ya need, itll beat workin with that wacky designer!seriously brakin80,what type wood is used for the dashes?i could probably helpya out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Anthony, The best stuff to use is 1/8" marine ply. 1/8" luan ply is ok too. Still beats Heritage price,---Keoke

thanks keoke, when you take into account that it will probably get wet,and suffer from exta-eem high temp from sun exposure etc, marine grades the best for this application, but 1/8th"?perhaps 1/4,is that what ya meen?and ya tell me whats gunna be your cut?$$$-got a template? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

I just measured a BJ7 dash sitting in my office. .140" thick plywood (so just bit over 1/8"). Don't forget the piece of wood that goes up front that gives it the bend. Here's a picture .. worth 1000 words give or take

Anthony! 1/8". Thats my story an I'm sticking to it!!.No sorry I do not have a template.---Keoke /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

How are these dashes attached to the scuttle? The dash on my BJ8 project needs replacement so I thought I would just make my own. What should I use for the covering? Thanks for your help.

Hi John, The dash panel is attached using the two screws that hold the mirror in place along with a pair of metal clips that you bend to lock the outer edge in place. These metal clips can be located by looking up under the dash pad close to the doors. The covering is usually the same material as used on the top door arm rests and are predominantly Black in color.A thin about 1/4" padding is used under the cover.---Fwiw---Keoke
