Many of those early bird pilots had some unpleasant consequences from inhaling/swallowing all the castor oil that the rotaries used for lubrication. The rotating cylinders prevented using a sump, so they sprayed out the castor oil with every rotation.

Did the same thing to the pilots, that a dose of castor oil did to kids back in the day.
 
I don't know if he is still with us anymore, probably not, but Cole Pallon (spelling), up in Rhinebeck NY had one that they flew quite a bit. As I remember it had a blip throttle, fully open or off! Took the wife and a friend up there once, quite a primitive airport that matched the primitive aircraft and very interesting! (y)

The old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. I follow them on Instagram, they have quite the collection of vintage aeroplanes. It's one place I'd like to visit some day.

And, yes the Gnome rotary has a blup throttle.
