rollbar ?

Once it gets hot here in KC I plan on dropping the new motor in the bugeye. Maybe in July? One of the things I've thought of is a rollbar for the ol bug. I'm not going to cut on sheetmetal or do any major body mods, but I would consider a rollbar, but I haven't ever actually seen one in a bugeye. I was over at Prather's

Thursday and the flywheel had been shave'd down 3 lbs. It'll go vroom a little more better /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/driving.gif. Motor should be back from the machinist next week. Anyway, I am curious about the roll bar /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif.

This is another debate that seems to never end. Personally, I wouldn't put one in my street car. The short ones (that allow the use of the top) end up very close to my head. The taller ones don't look right on a street car. My plan is to drive safely and keep the car right side up. Granted, accidents happen no matter how safe you are, but I've heard/seen stories of many people rolling convertibles/roadsters without roll bars and walking away. But, then again, I've never heard of a story of a roll bar causing serious injury. ...now I've confused myself ... maybe I do want one. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

The Tunebug came with a short roll bar that I removed once the car was home. It was low enough that my head was taller than the bar (I'm 6' 1") and it took up space in the car that I needed. For me I was willing to take the risk that the car wouldn't flip over. I ride a motorcycle as well, so I understand the risks involved.

I agree. Most (if not all) aftermarket roll bars that will actually allow the top to be erected are not tall enough to provide much additional protection.

Some people like the looks (I don't), and add them for that reason.

I'll add this to the mix - a properly built roll bar can also help protect the driver in a side impact and if any of you have parked next to an SUV lately, you can see how badly that could go.....

My car will have a 6-point cage in it probably next year. I just need to get a new bender first.

I have one in my car though I can admit that it is (mostly) just for the aesthetic. That is an interesting thought though about it providing protection in other kinds of crashes besides just rollovers. Makes perfect sense. Personally I think that the cars have a more balanced look if they have a rollbar when the top is down. Otherwise, in my opinion, the car looks awfully flat in profile. Still, it will always boil down to a question of individual taste.
(and I'm sure after seeing my Midget there are plenty of people here who wonder if I have ANY) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

I appreciate each imput. I like to try and look at all sides of any issue and then pick what works for me. I don't race the ole bugeye, but the protection of the rollbar? I guess if one comes into my life, I like it, and it works for me, then it might go into the ol bugeye.
