Roll bars

So I was remembering TR6BILLs trick rollbar/windblocker installation. The pics have gone btw, so Bill if you are reading this and still have them I'd love to get a copy of them...

Now I was wondering if anyone has ever seen an adjustable height rollbar.

See what I want is something like Bills setup so that I can have the benefit of windblocking but still be able to raise the top. I'd also like the opportunity to go out and play on a track, which requires a 2" above the helmet clearance, and I'm over 6'. It's got to be a 'real' rollbar as it has to pass inspection.

If the height adjusts then I could swap in a second (taller) hoop when I want to have fun, but keep the ability to raise the roof when I want to drive on the road.

Anyone ever seen or heard of anything like this?

Alan,

I don't know much about an adjustable roll bar, but that's a neat idea. Just thinking in my head you, could have a larger top hoop fit over the base, then secure it with two big bolts maybe. You could have holes drilled at different heights for adjust-ability. How legal that would be I have no clue, but I think the drill holes would decrease the effectiveness of the roll bar.

Not to hijack your thread, but do you think a dual hoop roll bar would look good on a TR6?

And another question: Have you bought that PRI carb setup yet?

I can't see why you couldn't fabricate an additional rollbar strictly for racing. What my brain sees are recepticals bolted to the frame rails, and then the roll bar sections bolt into these recepticals. For regular driving, you might only use two points, but utilize four points for racing (including the extension over the passenger seat.)

I've never see a true adjustable one, but since most competition ones are fabricated, I can't see why something can't be done.

Shannon - I'm not going anywhere near carbs. It's fuel injection and supercharger all the way for me. The 2500 they cost buys me an SM4. I want to see the dyno #s for those carbs is all.

Dual hoop - you mean like the pri spitfire? - No I think there is too much space between the seat and the back for it to look right. Maybe (and it's a big if) if you did Miata type seats or had a pre 72, but I'd want to see it first. I wouldn't want to be #1 doing that.

Sam - I figured I could go custom, but I wondered if anyone had seen this sort of thing. I'm thinking of sticking with two receptacles as I want it to stay street - it's for fun days on the track, not real racing. It would just have to pass tech. A bonus I guess would be that I could take the whole thing out and just leave the two collectors capped off for a "stealth" install.

Edit - I'd triangle it of course, but below the height of the top of the door so it was invisible from outside.

Alan,

I would definitely do some research in the SCCA rule book before you start anything:
https://www.scca.org/_FileLibrary/File/GCR2006.pdf

On my very brief glance at the roll cage section, it stated in a few places that the roll cage must be attached to the frame. But it also gives an opening for an adjustable roll bar like you suggest (see page 1172 in the above pdf).

Let me know what you you decide to do, and thanks for the opinion on the dual hoops.

I looked at something similar. Trouble is my eyes glazed over as it always does when I read stuff like that. No way I could be a lawyer... I wouldn't do a rollbar that wasn't bolted to the chassis - pointless otherwise.

There is a vintage race shop just down from the shop where the car is. Next time I go up (and I want to see my new Carillo rods - pretty sad, no?) I'll wander in and see what they can do for me, and more important, what it will cost.

I really like that windblocker/3rd light setup Bill did...

Alan, I will get another pic out next week when I get my camera back from my son.

Bill
