I picked up a set of NOS Leyland rod bearings for my engine, and I'm wondering if they have a shelf life or something. They're still in the packaging, although the seal has a small tear so air is getting in there. Basically what I'm wondering is: Is there any reason not to use these?
 
I just put a set of rod bearings in my brother's 1275 Sprite that have been sitting in a box in my garden shed for at least 20 years! We were going to buy new ones, but it's a ratty car and anyway, we're cheapskates.
As long as they're clean, I'd say you are OK (you are sure that they are not oversize/undersize...right?)
 
They're 010 under, which is what I need (the crank I oulled out of that engine need to be ground to that).
 
Hmm. I pulled them out of the package to check them, and two had some surafce rust. Most of it came off with a little oil and some elbow grease. Not much, just a little at the ends.
 
Hello Izual,
there is no shelf life on bearings as long as they are undamaged. A small amount of rust can be cleaned up and the shells will be serviceable. I would use them.
