rocker shaft

When I removed the rocker shaft there was no keeper on the front of the shaft. Luckily, I saw that and held it so that nothing came off. The manual says there should be a 'split pin'. Does this mean a cotter pin, roll pin or some other type of keeper?

Also, #3 and #6 intake valves were very sooty. All of the others were a nice gray/tan color. Any ideas?

Thanks, Pete

If you look at this picture, you will see a cotter pin in the front of mine:

Keep an eye out for the split pin that presumably fell out. With luck it will still be around in the area covered by the rocker cover. If not it went to the pan. Those magnet type oil pan bungs are worth the effort of installation.
