Rocker Shaft Assy

Anybody noticing the set screw on the one end of the Rocker Shaft Assy missing?? Mine is gone. It prevents misalignment of what I will call the upper & lower shafts and also ensure that oil stays in the shaft and lubricates the rocker arms, etc. Pretty difficult to find the #12-28 screw, about 1" long. None of the usual parts houses have it, Rimmer NG. Any experiences out there??

I just put mine back in with loctite about a month ago. I think it's only about 1/4" long, if that helps.

Peen the head of the screw with a pointed center punch, right on the very outer perimeter of the screw so that the dimple is shared by the screw and the pedestal. That's another way to lock it in place.

Maybe I'm confused about which screw you are talking about; but if it's the one that locks the rocker shaft to the rear pedestal, TRF has them listed as in stock, P/N 104859. I'd also guess there is a good chance you might find it if you switch to a magnetic drain plug.

I'll second the suggestion to use Loctite, preferably one of the oil-resistant formulas.

If your is missing, like mine was, check the foward rockers & valve tips. With that screw missing, the oil will not stay in the shaft. The front of the engine does not get lubricated. I had to replace the rockers & shaft. I have heard the screw falls in the oil pan.

Just to extrapolate the above points -- don't run your engine until you replace that set screw and find where the original one has gone.

Thanks everyone, TRF does not carry that item anymore. Seems like I'm getting sufficient oil in the area, but will feel a helluva lot better when it's replaced. Found a candidate at Bolt Depot.com, be here in a few days. Not going anywhere real soon. I'll secure it in there with some loctite.

I hope you have enough threads on the screw for loctite to hold for a long time. I thought the countersunk hole was perfect for peening the dimple lock.
