Rocker Panel Replacement; Engine in or out?

dave russell"measuring from piles of panels to find one that best fit the particular car"gee that would imply that pretty much none were the same in any way,shape or form!,including chassis,cowels,inner fenders,bonets,brackets mounting locations,on and on,howd they ever get em done?it would be interesting to find out what the suicide rate was in those production years?and what did they do with all the extra metal?recycle?i dont know were im going to start,but im going to see if anyone of those folks are still around to tell me what has to be some very interesting stories,any ideas welcome,thanks dave russell.i need this vacation!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
 
Really, it's a wonder that any of the Austin-Healeys got properly built.

Chassis structures were built by John Thompson Motor Pressing Ltd. The chassis' were shipped to Jensen where they were joined with body pressings done by Boulton Paul & Co. of Wolverhampton. Jensen did the final body assembly including finish paint & upholstery.

The body/chassis assembly was then transported to the Austin assembly plant at Longbridge, later Abingdon, for final running gear & drive train installation. It would be the Jensen workers who had to make the various body panels fit together.

All I can say is that the various folks involved in this project must have been extremely dedicated to get all of the parts from various sources finished into a pretty good product. Can you imagine the logistical problems of getting everything together & fitted?

Fine British craftsmanship and dedication.

Oddly enough a local newspaper carried an article comparing American, British and German production engineering with WW2 Aircraft. They found that the American planes were built using interchangeable parts with long production runs of standard aircraft. The German's planes were also built from interchangeable parts but their military insisted on so many variants specialized for specific duties that they lost much of the benefit and suffered as though they had dozens of different models rather than the few basic types. The British planes were handcrafted jewels with little real interchangeability in the absence of a big hammer....

Sound familiar?
 
I am in the dissassembly stage of my BJ8. It has sat out in the weather for 10 years so I am sure there are questions with the frame. I did notice that when I jacked up the car from the rear crossmember, with basically a complete car, the door clearances at the top of the door decreased, very little but they did decrease. Now withe the engine and transmission removed I do not notice any difference in the door gaps. I am going to do a complete restoration so what are the recommended frame modifications to these cars?

no keoke,im not taken a vacation from my healey projects!i need one from my day job,got too many customers like you! heres an example:"designer" to me "in the large alcove i want it to be very bright,but i dont want anyone to see lite or use any kind of lighting fixtures,i dont want light to show" and the vase must be suspended in the air,no glass shelf,brakets,or wires"o.k.keoke dig what i mean?and she was dead serious!!! enough of my personal woes,anyone know if virgin atlantic flys direct? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif
