Rocker Cover Gasket...

When installing a new rocker cover gasket, do you use gasket sealant on both sides or just one?

Personally, I only use sealant where water is involved, such as thermostat or water pump. Just my opinion, but the correct torque I find is enough.
Go on, I can take it......

Congrats on your service, former RN here.
By RN, I don't mean nurse, I mean Royal Navy.

I don't use any on the rocker cover gasket

On the V/C side. LIGHTLY apply Blue or Black RTV to surface with your finger. allow to set-up as per directions. Install onto V/C. Now do same with motor oil to surface to contact head. Lasts forever and allows for EASY V/C removal and replacement.

Not just a hobby. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/iagree.gif Stick-em on the V/C... I use a light film of black wheel bearing grease on the engine side... Seals great and no problem removing or changing gaskets...

Never use anything on these, after all got to get em off to adjust valves.

This is one of those 'personal' things, methinks. I usually RTV the gasket-to-cover side, Hylomar the engine side.

...since I knew BAZ was an ex-pat Emglishman, I immediately knew it was Royal Navy... Neat. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/england.gif

asouply: There oughta still be an Atlas rocket on display "up there" I took photos of "down here" (at Patrick AFB) bein' "shoe-horned" into the belly of a C-5! That's how it got to W-P intact! I was with what is now "Combat Camera". Was "Aerospace Audio Visual Service" (MAC) 'back-when'. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif

Depends on the valve COVER you are using.

Gasket RETENTION is the operative word here, as the gasket has a tendency to squish or move in or out. The stock stamped steel cover provides nearly no RETENTION, as well as some ally covers....the best way for some positive retention is contact cement on the cover side......realy realy clean cover as in MEK clean and let it sit in tension on the motor overnight B4 use.

Got it installed - I used some RTV on the cover side, and oil on the engine side.

Thanks for all the help!
Tony

DrEntropy: Ya, the Atlas is here at the Museum... I was stationed at Patrick from 99-05, I remember them shipping the Atlas up here right before I left. A buddy of mine prepared it for shipping, and signed his name on the inside of the rocket! You spending the winter in Melbourne?

Hey Baz...GO NAVY!!!!! A squid is a squid is a squid...doesn't matter the uniform!!!

I almost thought the world was gonna end... Hap & I *almost* agree?!? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif

...then it hit me: "glue"... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

asoupley: The Atlas I photo'd was back in '72!!! I live in left-central Florida, BTW.

on my rebuild, the gasket was ultra blued to the cover side only. i will probably redo this since the UB is oozing out the sides and it looks like >>>>>. It's amazing that the shop took such care in rebulding this motor only to slop UB on this gasket ... just not acceptable to me ...

It shouldn't take THAT much to stick the gasket onto the cover.

Step-by-each: I generally clean the cover *hospital clean*, run a THIN film of RTV (UB or the copper stuff) on the cover-to-cork side of the gasket, place it in the cover and weight it or install it with slight load on the two bolts until the RTV is set. Then I usually check the gasket to be sure it hasn't "squirmed" out of place anywhere. On install, it can be grease, oil or Hylomar (all of which work just fine, BTW) THIN FILMED on the gasket mating surface and tighten 'er down. It's always worked for me, so that's what I do. *shrug*
