Rocker arm lubrication question

Looking at my front rocker arms through the oil filler pipe while the engine is turning about 1500 RPMs and up to temp. I see a very small amount of oil bypass dripping out the rocker arm weep holes. The top of the head is a little wet with oil, but not as much as I think it should be. Is this typical of the 18V engine or should there be more oil flow to the rockers? This engine has only 500 miles on it and runs 55 lbs oil pressure at 2000 RPMs hot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif PJ

Paul -

When I rebuilt our '73, I noticed the same thing. I was assured by folks on the Forum that it's normal, and though we've put little miles on it, everything seems fine.

Thanks Mickey, I've worked on a lot of cars over the years and the "B" engine seems to have a very poor oiling system for the rocker arms. As long as it's "NORMAL"?, then I'll let it go. The car won't be a daily driver anyway. And, the old rockers lasted some 30 odd years before I had the engine rebuilt along with new rockers and shaft, The new ones will last as long as I have the car anyway. It was just room for concern on my part. Thanks! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif PJ

It does seem there's not a lot happening "up there." Your O/P is right where it should be. You can just about run a B engine with the valve cover off and not lose much oil. You could go to the trouble of adding an overhead oiling "kit" but if the engine was put together correctly you would see scant advantage from it.

Drive the wheels off'n it!

We'll leave it as it is Doc. Thanks! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif PJ
