Roadisde 1984 Jag V-12

On this weekend's trip up to the cabin, I drove by ( and returned to check out) a old red Jag XJ parked in a gas station lot with a for sale sign in the window. It said "1984 Jag V-12" and a phone number. it was old and faded red with a nice tan leather interior, but had no identifiable model markings on it...my guess is that it is a 1984 XJS...before I call about it, I wanted to do some research on it, but I am an MG guy and don't know too much about Jags. And I have no idea about the values of this classic, but not yet antique beauty...faded and rusted V-12. Any comments would be appreciated, especially useful tips about what to ask about it and to look at to evaluate whether or not this might be a good "clasic diver" for me.

Those are nice cars, but they "can be" money pits as well - even more so than a 6 cyl Jag. If you're not sure that one is in prime mechanical shape to begin with, I'd have it checked out by a competent mechanic who knows Jags before even thinking about it.

Easy ID XJS 2 doors, flying buttresses on rear of roof. XJ12 4 door, wide chrome strip (1") down sides of car.Not officially imported to US, plenty in Canada.

It can take a fair commitment of time and some money to sort out a V12. I would be more afraid of rust than mechanical woes.If the car runs, the engine should be fairly silent. If it has a sustantial tapping, it likely has dropped a valve seat. Value of car with dropped valve seat, or not running is between $500.00 and 1000.00. Maybe a little more if the interior is perfect.

All that being said, there is nothing on these cars that is above the mechanical ability of a decent home mechanic. It just takes longer to do anything, and you buy twice as many parts. Still, the ride behind the V12 makes it all worth while.
