road trip sites?

Got any links to your favorite road trip web sites? Sites where folks have documented their trips (across the county, around the world, etc.) - car, motorcycle, etc. Here's an interesting one:

Peking to Paris 2013

Use arrows at bottom left to scroll through the photos.

I want to get some ideas of what kinds of road trip sites people like. Another I've been following: a recent cross country trip of the Oregon Trail MG guys - things like that. I'll probably use BCF Road Trips for mine.

Thanks.
Tom

Various parts of the Lincoln Highway makes sense. And Rt. 66 of course. A personal fav is either the NJ or PA side of the Delaware River from The Water Gap to New Hope.

I really liked Carlsbad Caverns and Mesa Verde on my road trip. Petrified Forest National Park/Painted desert in AZ was ok, but in summer it's a bit hot, plus they had some mean winds kicking up when I visited. However, the Petrified Forest is on part of "historic" Rt 66. The Grand Canyon is nice, but if you're going to do that, I might suggest doing the north rim, almost everyone does the south rim. For pictures, early morning and late afternoon/evening are best for the Grand Canyon. The shadows brings more depth to the Canyon's landscape.

One thing I will note is the road into Mesa Verde is heckuva lot of fun to drive and it has some great vistas. Switchbacks that have you looking at road -> sky (no shoulder or guard rail) is vertigo inducing.

oops - sorry. Didn't mean "sights" - meant "sites".

How 'bout some suggestions for good "road trip websites". Different sites you've seen where you like the layout, narrative, etc.

:computer:

I should probably start another thread on "what to see along the way".

Thanks.

lol

I started to do mine in "WordPress", but internet connectivity on the trip was iffy at best. So i gave up on my travel log. WordPress is technically "blogging" software, but it has a wealth of plugins that will allow you to configure it to do what ever you like.

I don't know if you want to run your own site or do you want to use something that's ready made (e.g. Photobucket, Flickr, etc).

My blog (signature lines below) is on WordPress. I've also got zillions of photos on Photobucket. I'm probably going to document this trip here on BCF in the Road Trips area (unless that's only for small projects?).

As I'm staying with friends pretty much all along the way, I don't think internet will be a problem every night.

What the heck - maybe I should just make lots of photos and videos along the way, and post them when I return. And just put up a few random daily posts here on BCF, similar to that MGB Oregon Trail topic on another site.

Thanks.

Check out this site: www.motorcycleroads.com/search.php?q=Pennsylvania. It and other sites like it have helped me choose highways with an attention to quality of pavement, traffic and other factors that can make (or break) the driving enjoyment.
I chose to direct you to PA on purpose (but just enter a state and hit search). Although your not traveling through Pennsylvania (this time), the Route 6 "The Grand Highway of The Republic" is one of the best trans East/West routes imaginable. It connects all of PA's county seats along Pennsylvania's upper tier and when considering terrain, scenic views, pavement quality, and traffic it's awesome. Using (this site and some others like it) just last year, it turned us on to some great Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina roads. This year we're Kentucky bound.
Although routes can be loops, one can pick and choose just a portion of one and connect to another. There are times when the Interstate becomes a "no alternative", but it's not often and typically not for long.

Tom, This site and its forum might be helpful. americanroadmagazine.com

Thanks. That is a *very* good site for road trip ideas.

Any other suggestions on recommended websites and blogs about road trips?

Tom

https://balloonfiesta.com/event-info/event-schedule Our esteemed Basil is correct. Here is the website, gives complete schedule and you may stay with us as long as you like or need. Wait a minutes - I'm talking guest here, not resident. :angel2:

(Well, the length of the stay is directly proportional to the quality of the food ... hint hint :jester:)

That balloon festival you and Basil mentioned sounds *great*. I should be in your neck of the woods around that time. Hey, if the car breaks down while there, they can use it for ballast!

A couple of years ago, I obtained "Motorcycling Across Ohio -- A Guide" by William Murphy. This guide provides several trips, all within the state, usually with a historical or geographical theme.

Thanks. I'm also using "Road Trip USA" (Jensen)

and "Scenic Highways & Byways" (National Geographic Society).

Some great drives and things to see. So many, I'll have to do another trip!

Tom

I am going to get Road Trip USA and see if I can map out a short trip in the TR4A that my husband would agree to! It would have to be after beach season and after football season.
