Let's give this a try: A teaser for the piccys to come, once I can get around to shrinking the file sizes. First thing to meet my eyes in the car park when we arrived at Elkhart Lake Vintage Races 9/20.

Second image now. This, gentlemen (and ladies) is a Green Goddess! Military fire truck. I have a story concerning these bad boys, but suffice to say that despite the exotica and mouth-watering machines up at Road America last weekend, THIS was my favourite!!

The owner (I forgot his name, I hope he forgives me) is a great guy, a true enthusiast. He allowed my two young nephews to climb in the cab and play with the bell, and the "blues and twos"!

Also owns a wonderful blown Midget (30's vintage) which he was racing. I told him about the forum, hope that he gets on board with us.

Great Pictures!
The second Bugatti, though, shouldn't have 6 cylinders, but 8. Unless it didn't have a Bugatti engine, of course! From your pics I'd say they were type 37 and a 35B (SOHC, straight-8, Supercharged, 2.3 litre.)

Nice Steve!

Makes me wish I could go to even more races!
I honestly did not know what the Green Goddess was....but it's way cool!

The little 2-seat, eight cylinder Bugatti is a T35 (or T35B)....one of the most famous (and revered) racing cars of all time. And my favourite car. Real ones sell at auction for seven figures (US dollars). Even the very nice fakes built in South America fetch $250,000. The T35 has a relief valve in the intake manifold and a hole in the engine cover to allow flames from engine backfires to escape....an interesting feature.

The similar-looking four cylinder car is a T37. I *think* I have seen that particular T37 before (at Lime Rock). All of those old, classic Bugattis had non-removeable cylinder heads (head and block cast as one). To do a valve job, the crankshaft has to come out.

There is another very well-known T37 vintage racer that we always see at Lime Rock. This car lost it's engine (to a speed boat!) about 50 years ago. Later, one of it's owners put a Model A Ford engine in it! Then it sat in a chicken coop for years. It is ratty and tatty, with seats patched up with tape, peeling paint, etc. And of course, with the little flathead Ford, it doesn't sound like a regular Bug. But it is a crowd favourite, because it is so unique.

The yellow 356 coupe looks an awful lot like the car I saw at the ~NJMP Thunderbolt Historics~ .
The 356 that I saw came as part of a race team that had two 914s.
Was that the same crowd you saw?

Local Elkhart Lake artist, Kelly Newcomb, just finished a watercolour of my buddy's (Ron Davis) Morgan Plus 8. You can see it and other examples of her artwork at:

https://www.kellynewcomb.com/

I met her at her studio in the old train depot a couple of years ago. She is a very talented individual.

Ron and several others go up each year to flag corners; Ron is also a Concours judge.

Steve, I was at the same event, on the Sunday. The fire truck was at the same event last year-it's quite cool, my Dad and I both gave it a good look-see.

In the spirit of sharing, and not to steal anyone's thread, here's the green MG in action, down at turn 7.

My personal favorite car, from the pre-war class, is the Franziss. It was at the same event back in '06. Owned by a nice Englishman named Roger Sweet, it's a combination of chain gang Frazer Nash chassis and running gear, bodywork clearly inspired by the Delage Grand Prix car, a Brescia Bugatti radiator, and a Curtiss OX aero engine. Mr. Sweet did an American tour back in '06, and I figured that'd be the last time I saw it. Imagine my surprise! Goes like stink and sounds fantastic.

Can't resist, here's a couple more, then I'll return the thread to it's rightful owners!

Two Sprites from the all Spridget race.

This Sprite was raced in period, and is a mostly period correct competition car (hence the black and white and graininess). It did not race, but did lead the pace lap of the Spridget race. Lovely little car.

The Group 44 Jaguar E-Type. Sadly, this car did not race this year (I saw it last fall), as it sounds just fantastic. Another one of those times where I managed to get a car with a plain background-it could almost be 1974 again.

You mean that white roadster?

That's a Lancia Aurelia roadster, not a Daimler, I suppose they look kind of similar...

I'm salivating over that motorhome, and there's still nothing like that here in Calgary, as pathetic as we are...

It's just not a hot spot for imports here, that's all

The motor home looks like an old "Flexible" bus. A popular conversion in the 60s & 70s. Very streamlined.

William, I was at turn five after the trip up to the paddock. I took a few shots of the racing but was too far away and none of them came out well.

I have photos of the Franziss as well, but really of that engine! There was a stamp on the side of the block, 21.12.1918. My dad researched the engine, and apparently it was used extensively in training aircraft, but the rate of engine failures meant that the RAF were losing a lot of trainee pilots!

This was one of the last engines to be built, as production was halted right after the end of WW1.

The owner of that Green Godddess has plans to turn it into a transporter for his car. He had a tent attachment made to match the markings on the truck, and they have quite the setup in there. I have photos!

He bought the Bedford in Southampton, had it shipped over here, and drove it from the docks in New York back to Wisconsin!! And that thing is SLOW!!!!! He's a character, a great guy. Very enthusiastic.

Kim Tonry snapped this photo a couple of years ago at Road America...he calls is "What Would Jesus Drive?"

I actually meant the Green Goddess that I was salivating over, just to clarify...

Although I do like the bus too, it probably is an American bus...
