One hundred years ago today, at 2:20am local time, RMS Titanic sank in the North Atlantic.

1514 people lost their lives in the disaster.

710 people survived.

Rest in peace, all those who sailed on her.

I wish that to them too, but it seems impossible. I don't understand what it was about this tragedy that has spawned so much commercialism over the years. Books, models, movies, OK I can see that, but I once spotted an inflatable slide at a carnival that was made to look like the inclined stern of the Titanic just before it disappeared below the surface. I thought that was in poor taste.
And I myself am at fault for perpetuating such things. I once bought a book/ model set merely out of disbelief. the book is nicely done, and someone spent a lot of time designing the model. you pull back a lever that opens a gash in the starboard bow, then place it in some water. it slowly fills the bow, tripping a float inside that "breaks" the bow from the stern. the bow sinks, then the stern tips up and goes under.
My only hope is that engineers see this stuff and put it in their hearts to not let their designs come to that.

Our ASME President had his laptop wallpaper set as a ship flipped over bow up. The caption below it read, "Could it be that your only purpose to stand as an example to others." or something to that effect.

I think about that often.

That's one of the main reasons to remember the ship, and the people.

Poignant pic Tom,
I have a couple like that that my Dad took of a merchant ship that went into a minefield and the ship he was chief engineer on went in to rescue the survivors

When I was in college, just before the USN called, oh, late 67 or early 68...the house we ended up renting, knew the folks....went to diner. The lady's mother was there, and for some reason my Mom mentioned Titanic. The lady's mother got real quiet...almost catatonic.
Come to find out she was ON Titanic, lost her mother and I think brother.
