RIP Charlie Watts!

Wonder if the Stones will follow the lead of the Dead and Heartbreakers. Certainly won't be the same band without him.

Repeating a Charlie Watts story that’s probably not true but too good to pass up…

Late one night (morning) after a gig, Mick Jagger drunkenly called Charlie Watts in his hotel room and shouted, “Where’s my drummer? We’re having a band meeting and my drummer needs to be here!” Mr. Watts hung up, got out of bed, showered, shaved, put on one of his bespoke suits and a tie, and proceeded to Mr. Jagger’s room. When Mick opened the door, Mr. Watts is said to have slugged him so hard that other band members had to catch him before he flew out the window. Mr. Watts then said to a very stunned Mick, “I am not your ####ing drummer. You are my ####ing singer!”

Now someone PLEASE tell me that it really happened.

I don’t know but it’s a great story!

Hard to believe that Keith Richards outlived him.

Watts was about 2 years older than Richards. But I take your point.

Our 20+ year old cat more or less stopped grooming himself in the last several months of his life and he looked horrible. We tried to comb him out, but his hair just became too matted. We did our best, but it was a losing battle.

Anyway, in his last months we took to calling him Keith Richards because he looked like a walking dead cat.

Bas, I'm sorry about you cat, but that's hilarious that you started calling him Keith Richards. Was he the tabby that was in several of your old photos?

Possibley. We have had several cats. This was Devon (aka Keith Richards) in better days, but starting to get a little rough around the edges.

Just happened to stumble on this interview with Charlie and Ed Bradley brings up this story.

I thought he was just another dissolute Rocker. Read his obit. Interesting guy - and married to the same woman for 50 years...

One thing I noticed, most rock drummers hold the stick straight out from both hands, self taught I guess. Watts showed he had at least some amount of actual training as he carried the left stick with the stick coming out the upside down hand, for lack of a better description. I have a brother who is a drummer for the last near 50 years and he is a stickler for using the sticks the way. he was taught as a kid.

An hour ago, I caught a snippet (on the Sirius Stones channel), where Watts said they could replace any member except Mick and Keith.

Found this article (about his wife) very interesting - and loved his quote:

"My wife and daughter may come out on tour, but Shirley's always had other things outside of this band. She's a great fan of the Stones, though. I'm not; it's what I do. Mick and Keith and Ronnie are my friends and the band is a very good one, but that's it," he said in According to the Rolling Stones. "But Shirley actually plays our records. I don't."

It's sweet that his wife was a fan.

"I don't like drum solos, to be honest with you, but if anybody ever told me he didn't like Buddy Rich I'd right away say go and see him, at least the once."

The Stones channel I think you are talking about is channel #27 Deep Tracks, I believe they are playing nothing but Stones through Labor Day.
Did not see Stones live but I am big fan of theirs and most all old time rock and roll. This CRAP they mostly play nowadays and call it rock, I don't think there will be many people listening to it in 40 50 60 years like they are now to 60s-70s.

Never say never. Young people today are different, witness the popularity of ink as some are like walking art galleries. As the world changes faster and faster who know what today's youth will be nostalgic for when in their late parent or grandparent years as they reflect on "simpler" times. Taste is individual and I admit there are things from current artists that 40 years or more younger than me that I have on my playlist simply because songs here and there I find I like.

Titanfan,
That's what they said about the Beatles and other 60s - 70s music. A lot of it is still being listened to by even ten year olds. I don't "get" a lot of current music, but the millions who do will probably turn out to be right. Pearl Jam has a Sirius channel.
