Unable to test: put the hi-torque starter back in, and when I reconnected the ground to the +12v battery terminal, I got arcing and sparking! It‘s a positive earth ground car. Verified with my voltmeter, I now have 12v between the positive battery terminal and ground. Never seen this. On checking various points, and with the starter motor disconnected, I have 30-ohms between the solenoid casing (which is grounded) and its upper terminal... which has the battery negative lead connected to it. And 30-ohms is as good as a short.
Intend to replace the solenoid now. This is weirding me out!
