TR2/3/3A Ring gear shot?

Unable to test: put the hi-torque starter back in, and when I reconnected the ground to the +12v battery terminal, I got arcing and sparking! It‘s a positive earth ground car. Verified with my voltmeter, I now have 12v between the positive battery terminal and ground. Never seen this. On checking various points, and with the starter motor disconnected, I have 30-ohms between the solenoid casing (which is grounded) and its upper terminal... which has the battery negative lead connected to it. And 30-ohms is as good as a short.
Intend to replace the solenoid now. This is weirding me out!

Is that for the original Lucas solenoid next to the battery or the one on the modern starter?

Yeah, an 11-pinion starter is a bad match on a ring gear made for 9. Hopefully a PO didn't do a flywheel swap.

No, it’s a press-on. My references to the solenoid is for the one next to the battery. After dinner and a drink, I cannot figure out why I have 12-v potential between the chassis and (+) battery terminal!

I need to change the topic of the thread; looks like the ring gear is just fine. It’s the starter and solenoid that are the issues.

Sorry, I didn't see the other replies before I posted, it may not be a short to earth, it could be your solenoid is stuck on. I was using a new non-genuine solenoid and found if I pressed the end button it would some times stay connected until I pulled a battery terminal off.

Jim, I would go back and have a look at your Hi-torque starter, a common fault with them is the fittings on the pinion end tend to work loose and need a good thread locker to keep them firmly fixed, and as you said it did work before the rebuild.

Graham
Definitely did that! They were tight.
