Right Hand Drive cable routing

I am at the stage of installing the dash into my RHD Bugeye conversion. I am looking for a picture of the fire wall (or comment on the pics below) from the engine bay that shows the correct cable routing for the tachometer cable, speedo cable and heater control cable.

I believe that the temp sensor cable and the oil pressure line go through the same grommet and hole, but if that is not the case please correct me. I am pretty sure I have the brown battery wire and starter cable at least correct !

Please note that the wiring harness ... in fact the complete running gear ... is transplanted from a Mk2, hence the position of the Voltage Regulator and fuse box, as the wiring was not long enough to have them in the correct Bugeye position on the guard.

At present, the speedo cable is routed on the far left near the main harness as there was a hole here and the speedo is on that side of the dash. The tacho cable is pretty much a straight shot and is just to the right of the VR. To the right of that are the temp cable and oil line, with heater cable on the far right. Is that correct ? Any comments appreciated.

I'll check my pics tomorrow when I get a moment. Pretty sure I've got decent pics of the firewall in my car.

Ok, I have been going through all the Bugeye pics I have and after a bit of Sherlock work, I now think that...

The tach cable passes through the most right hole, closest to the battery. With its current routing the cable is too long, so passing through this hole near the battery will allow it to make an S to the right effectively using the excess cable length.

The heater cable then moves across to the left most hole near where the VR is mounted Mk2 style. This will match the bend in that cable which is to the left, I guess from 50 years of being held in that position !

I also remembered that the correct routing for the speedo cable for a LHD car is for it to enter through the front bulk head next to the steering column. The same hole is present on the right side of the car for RHD. Although incredibly difficult to get the engine bay side grommet in place, this is the correct route. I think the hole near the main harness pass through is an extra, drilled by someone to route the speedo cable, unaware of the correct hole under the coil location next to the steering column.

If anyone can confirm, please do so.

Thanks
Lew

Don't have any great pics, but from what I have and from the Horler book I've come up with answers. Also used this page on Gerard's website:

https://www.gerardsgarage.com/Garage/Tech/Cables_wires_lo2.htm

Note the hole marked "plugged" on Gerard's site is where you have your tach going through, that makes sense. Tach and Speedo should be the only ones that move RHD -> LHD.

I believe that the temp sensor cable and the oil pressure line go through the same grommet and hole, but if that is not the case please correct me. I am pretty sure I have the brown battery wire and starter cable at least correct !

These are correct.

At present, the speedo cable is routed on the far left near the main harness as there was a hole here and the speedo is on that side of the dash.

This is NOT correct. My speedo cable came out a hole that was next to where the steering column passed through the firewall. My car does not have the hole you used.

The tacho cable is pretty much a straight shot and is just to the right of the VR. To the right of that are the temp cable and oil line, with heater cable on the far right.

I believe these are correct as well.

You beat me to it, Lew, but I think you have it.

I just double checked, and my tach cable did come out of that left-most hole (next to your VR). Doesn't mean it was correct on my car, but that's where it was routed. Heater cable was in the same spot as it is on a LHD car.

So, is the Heater cable through the hole that is in the battery area ?

That's where mine was far as I can remember/see in my pics (I really should have taken better shots). Same spot it's in for a LHD car.

The right hand drive tach cable is shorter than the left hand drive. I have a NOS right hand drive cable that was sold on E-bay listed as NOS left hand drive. Don't know about the speedo cable....it may be different as well though its length isn't critical.

Kurt.

Kurt,
Yes, I have new tach and speedo cables from AH spares. The RHD tach cable is definitely shorter by 10" (26" v 36") and the speedo is 8" longer for the RHD (62" v 54"). I can get the tach cable for approx. $13 from Ah spares. Did you want to sell your RHD cable ? If the length is correct, I'd be happy to take it off your hands as I am shipping a Bugeye to Australia and it will need a RHD setup as well.

Cheers
Lew

Lew, for the little bit its worth I'll let it gather more dust for a while. Maybe get around to E-baying a bunch of stuff if I ever retire.
