Ribcase rebuild help

I'm in the process of rebuilding my ribcase. I replaced all of the gears including 2nd and 3rd. When I installed 2nd, it was snug with .001-.002" of axial play. But when I installed 3rd gear with the locking collar, there was .010 to .012" of axial play. As a result, 3rd gear can move about the mainshaft. All parts look good, with no wear on the needle bearings or mainshaft. Is the end play taken up when the whole mainshaft gets installed, or do I need to do something?
thanks for your help.
