Ribcase - all the same?

Hello all -
Can I use my 1098 (CG)ribcase tranny on my 1275? I know the clutch assembly is different..is that all?
I see different references (folks selling trans) that say "fits all" Then, I see some referring to a "1275" trans.

If they do fit universally..are the later ones better than the older ones..or truely all the same? (at least when new! /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif )

I wanted to do the 5-spd..but don't think the budget is going to allow $1200+ at this point.

Sorry to be a post-hog..I thought I had a plan to finish before June to make the Ozarks..but multiple oil leaks, doubts on a 40+ yr old clutch and so on have me now evaluating the install of the 1275..which I was saving to put in with the 5spd.
Good news is I have a new clutch assy that came with the rebuilt engine!

Thanks in advance! Devin

Devin, use it. The gear tooth profiles were changed after April, '64, so the gears are not interchangeable between early and late boxes, but the trannies interchange as a complete unit.
The later boxes are stronger than the early ones.

Thanks for the clarification Jeff!
I'd like to take a peek inside it while its out. What would are the 'usual suspects' to check? - it has 74Kmi on it. Shifts great right now, just doing the 'extra' check while its out and before attempting the drive to the Ozarks this summer.

Or should I change the leaking seals and leave it the heck alone since it is running fine??

Just take some extra oil and drive it. The cost of a few extra qt's of oil pales in comparison of the adventure of the open road and a Spridget on it's way to Arkansas. If you pull the tranny to fix what are the odds of getting it done in time. If it is working leave weel enough alone.

Were it me, I'd go through it while its out if it has known problems...but, then look at what happened with my '63 I'm getting ready for missouri...hehehe
