RHD Conversion

Greetings All,

Just wondering if anyone out there in MG land has done a RHD conversion to an early model B. I am considering it, just to make the car different. It is probably illegal, silly, and a waste of time, but I think it's kind of a cool thing.

Thanks for any input.

actually its legal and not too hard if you can find all the bits. I saw a right hand drive car converted to lhd and it wasn't too involved

I have been looking for a RHD dash, since that and the rack seems to be the main parts needed for the conversion. I think it will be a cool conversion should I get around to it.

I think you need a steering column also but could be wrong, I know Tony is planning a conversion on one of his cars, and I'd bet he could source you the parts on his upcoming trip to England

I've sourced everything I need except an accelerator pedal - will get it this summer....actually even have some extra stuff......am close to tackling my '63 RHD conversion.

If it's illegal then I'm in trouble. I have four RH cars that I drive nearly every day. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I believe you will need dash, steering column cowl, steering rack, accelerator pedal and if you don't have one, a right side mirror.

I also grabbed a new RHD wiring harness though you could use the old one...plus accelerator & choke cables & a few minor items.

Good point. Accelerator cable will also be longer and it uses a small bracket to brace it to the pedal box cover.

Yep, LHD pedal box, MC's & pedals can be reused but everything that has to reach to the other side of the engine has to be changed & there are extra brackets to make it reach....also, the reason I grabbed a RHD wiring harness was so I wouldn't have all that extra wire behind the dash.

....& Windshield washer system has to be redone as does the wiper system (motor has to go on opposite side of dash behind the relocated glove box), system also turns opposite LHD wiper system (I think).

...& foot mounted dimmer switch has to be relocated.

....lots of litle things.

...plumbing to brakes & clutch from MC's (I also sourced all original RHD plumbing)

Everytime I thought I had all I needed, I'd think of something else....I've been keeping a log so when I actually start the conversion I can write a tech tip.

That gives me some things to think about. Perhaps I should start a list for the things I need to collect, and then perhaps do some converting.

Nothing wrong with wanting to do this conversion. I bought a RHD steering rack for my Bugeye, thinking I might convert it some day. Do what makes you happy, that's the key here.

I would say that is Going Postal.

LOL!

Tony brought up relocating the wiper motor which reminds me... wiper arms are different for RHD. The arms also park on the opposite side, so the motor or gearbox is likely different as well, but I'm not sure which or how.

Didn't think about that - knew they parked differently but didn't realize the arms might be different......something else to pick up this summer!

Yeah, the angle is reversed. There was an MGB on eBay the other week that had RHD wipers on a LHD car. The blades stuck up at an odd angle when parked. Supposedly a properly restored car, too!
