Reverse Light Wiring

I noticed my reverse lights don't work. Upon further inspection I found a wire dangling from about where the reverse lamp switch is on the tranny. There is also a bundle of 3 wires going down that way, but they weren't connected to anything. If I short one of them to ground the rev lamps come on.

How many wires should be coming from the switch and does the Hot wire go on the dangling wire? I've checked my manuals and I can't figure out how it is supposed to be wired and I don't want to fry a bunch of fuses shorting the wrong wire out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazyeyes.gif

ther should be two wires coming off the tranny. Check that single wire you mentioned and see if it is really a pair. The three wires in the car harness would be rev/lamps and seat belt lite and a ground. if the wire from the tranny is three wires then there is a seatbelt switch up there as well.

Hmm, I'll take a closer look. I thought there should have been at leas 2 wires for the switch and I didn't even think about the seat belt light wire being down there. I guess I'll be doing a little LBC wiring today. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hammer.gif

Thanks!

I am also in wiring pergatory. My headlights work. My tail lights work.My brake lights work, my ,emmergancy lights work, my turn signals ............DO NOT WORK....iT IS DRIVING ME crazy & it is a short drive! The people down here think I'm waving when I use hand signas. I have to drive like a kamakazi making turns and changing lanes. My death is emminent especially since I drive Mickey Mouses car. If I get a key blank can walmart,Harware store or a lock smith make one? thanks Randi

I found my reverse light problem. It is related to the front U-joint coming apart while the PO was cruesing at highway speed. Apparently it yanked one of the wires out of the switch. I'll have to chew on whether or not I want to fix them (new carpet blocking the access hole /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cryin.gif).

Ragarding your turn signals, do they light but not flash? Or do nothing?

Since your emergency flashers work, I would check the wiring between the flasher unit and the turn signal lever.
If it's the turn signal unit Moss has them on sale right now.

i would check the hazzard switch first.. power for the turns comes thru this switch. in other words if the hazzards have to be OFF in order for power to get to the turn switch

my turn signals light & flash when the emmergancy button is on- but with just the turn signal-nothing how many flashers or relays are there?Randi

i believer there are two. one behind the console near the hazzard switch, and another above the glove box.

YOur problem is likely the hazard switch. The power for the signals comes through the switch. You can pull the harness apart and test the circuits. I had the same problem and found the switch was one of the them.

Thank you gentlemen- people just don't see my arm(especially in the dark!) Randi

SKins- as an FYI, replacing the switch is not that bad a job. I did mine a couple years ago, and it only took about half an hour, and that was because I trimmed and re-terminated all the connections on the new switch. Bear in mind that my carpet was not new, like yours, so I just pulled it back a little, and had access easily.

Thanks, 77Midget. I didn't think it was too bad, I'm just not ready to pull the new carpeting back yet. I think I'll just write it up as a required maintenance item (up gripe) and fix it the next time I do major work in that area.

Exactly what mine was. I didn't touch it until I had to replace my e-brake cable and harness, for which I had to take the seat out, and the carpet off the tunnel anyway.

two birds, one stone (terrible aim, though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jester.gif)
