Ive been saving leather for two years now,and have tuned up grama's old singer. I have thread and piping.Ive learned how to sew. All I lack is courage. I want to redo the seats in my midget(it's a 76 or at least the seats are) I want to lose the headrests. Does anyone have words of wisdom before I open that can of worms? My seats are in good shape but the vinyl sticks to my....legs. thanks, Badbobby
 
Miata Seats. You won't be able to lose the headrests but you can find for $125-150. You do gain speakers integrated into the headrests and the tunes sound great.
 
Use the old seat covers as a pattern. Turn the old covers inside out and make lots of alignment marks to transfer after the old covers are taken apart. Use nylon double twist thread. You can order it from www.atrim.com. Normal cotton thread doesn't last long.

Thanks, I probably would have used the cotton thread. Zigzag of staight stitch on the panels? do you think "sofa foam" cut with an electric turkey knife will smooth out under the leather or do I need a barrier cloth like canvas. thanks Badbobby.
 
I strictly do Brit car upholstery and years back gave up trying to make foam look good. I tell my customers to buy the preformed foam kits from Moss or VB.
If you make your own, yes, put a "barrier" (canvas will work) between the foam and leather.

everything all these guys said- and patience. It is the best virtue! I hand sewn a rug, with bindings for my MG. I must have 20 hours in that carpet and it goes unnoticed- which makes the project a success.

Be willing to experiment and if you fail, try again. It will come out right (extra material helps- and when you do have extra material, there is no excuse for not trying again). It just depends on how much time you are willing to put into it.
