Just one reason why I love being retired, to be fortunate enough to be able do this; Been doing it since 1964.
This a glider, but I have many commercial power ratings, including rotor craft and flight instructor. I'd rather fly than eat! (According to my wife).

Why do you like retirement, or do you? That includes semi retirement also!

For me, one of the best things about retirement is just what I'm doing now ... sitting inside by the wood stove, watching *other people* drive on the icy highways to work.

Yeehaa!

Tom
no job, no worries, no money!

The only bad thing about retirement is that we have to wait so long to enjoy it!

Paul, i just "got" retired, after 22 years. for the past 7 when the most recent buyout came i have hated it. thought i would try to hang on for 3, 4 or 5 more years but that didn't have to happen. so a relief. today i can go visit my mom. and not rush. and i am sooo glad i already have a TR in the garage. it would be harder to justify today. to me it's like driving a biplane down the road. i have had only one fly in a glider, over aspen mountain in the 70's, wow. it stays with me to this day. it's a great day and my time is my own. probably have pb & j instead of going out for lunch. on my own time. yes retirement is GREAT. time is precious. enjoy.

I agree with you Tony,i'm lucky in that I got to retire early at 56. One just has to make sure you get all the toys before you retire as occasionaly there is too much month left at the end of the money. :cryin:

At age 52 I was plant manager for a manufacturing facility that was 7 acres under roof. I decided I had had enough and walked in and gave notice. They were stunned.
It was a place where the average was 20+ years on the job. What are you going to do was the question. Go home was my answer. I started a consulting business and worked from home doing tool design and cnc programming for companies all over the globe. Now at 62 I guess I have officially retired. Not sure exactly when it happened though.

For you guys that like to fly, I worked on aircraft parts too.
When you see the B2 go over, I produced the cnc program that made the mold for the bomb bay doors. I also worked on some things after 911 for aircraft collision avoidance. Can't say exactly what. I got into a lot of interesting projects, one being a project to help clean up ultra sound signals to get a clearer breast exam picture. Again, can't say much more about it.

Tom, i enjoy madison and in fact chose a trip the the edgwater to get engaged 20 years ago. slow starter, i am 57 in march. got some options, not too worried, dad was depression guy and taught his kid to be cheap so in good enough shape. modest wants. maybe call you someday this summer, so far madison has been too far to trust the TR. working on that. sw wisconsin is great driving. some of the best i have seen in my travels. lots of county roads and they all go somewhere. did it by bicycle some years ago on my way to the east coast. started snowing in vermont and flew home.

I just finished cleaning the driveway (5" white stuff), thinking about making some jerky this afternoon. Don't fill the feeders close to the house anymore as I found there were too many squirrels and mice around, lots of unused barns around the area they can frequent rather than my sheds.[/quote]

Bill, i think its maybe not when you stop working but when you stop working for someone you don't want to. then you can hopefully do what you want. what did you say, life is short.

I like retirement because it provides me with an unattainable dream that reminds me to stay as healthy as possible so I can keep working so I can afford to keep living so I can work as long as I can and afford to keep living and . . . . (did someone just say hamster?)

This pretty much says it all ..........

Retirement isn`t an occupation, it`s an obsession about when, where, what, and with whom you are occupied.

Although I do admit that it takes some getting used to, that getting paid once a month thing.

Hi Paul At 51,my wife and I packed it in,on March 7 2008, left the state of Corrupticut and moved to The Lakes Region of New Hampshire.I shut down my automotive tool business after 31 years and have not regretted one minute of leaving. To prepare for NH, her and I built a beautiful log chalet, that took 2 years working every weekend on the house ourselves.Getting back to what's really important in life is the greatest. The only thing I do miss is the business part.Being self-employed and in the garages everyday selling tools was never really work to me,as I enjoyed the people I dealt with.Talking about cars, tools women, racing, politics{not here though]and other stuff made selling secondary.Over the summer, her and I built a 30by40 garage for the toys and completed it in October,so I guess it's time to start the business up part time.Semi-retired 3days tools 4days Triumphs and other stuff. Glad I followed my 3 rules of life.#1 Figure out what you like to do and do it without guilt.Rule#2 Figure out what you can and cannot change.Accept the things you cant change.Rule#3 Most Important.Who is the richest man in the world?Answer-The guy who knows how much money is enough.Time to bring in some fire wood and get ready to go night skiing. It says it on the liscense plates-Live Free Or Die

Hi Paul 162-
Well, looks like we are both "glider junkies". I also have my power rating, but nothing comes close to the thrill of soaring!
My soaring has been put on hold due to this rotten economy... lost my job about a year ago (at 55) and I am still looking. Not ready to retire!!! My age and the economic times are not in my favor... :wall:
makes me feel like a tire removed from the car with lots of tread still left on it.

Hello Elliot, Sorry to hear of your situation.
Here's hoping you get back in the grove soon. Hopefully all will work out well. Keep the chin up. The flying bit will still be there when your ready.

Hi Paul-
I appreciate the good wishes. Seeing the picture you posted got my "flying hormones" all heated up
And you are correct, about the flying being there.... I am looking forward to my next BFR.
Regards.
