restoring the windshield

I have the original windshield from my BJ8. I replaced it due to superficial scratches due to the wipers. Can it be e surfaced? The new glass (12 years old now) seems softer and subject to road grit pitting.

For what it's worth, I used the Eastwood glass refinishing kit, and was very happy with the results. But it takes a *lot* of time and muscle.

I tried one of the glass polishing kits with my paint polisher as the worker. While it took off the haze from Ca+ and other hard water spots, it would not take off scratches. I even went at it with sandpaper as someone on youtube suggested to treat it like paint polishing but with fine sandpaper. Never got the scratches out. I have a mini rear window in my barn that is original but never going on my car due to the scratches.

My problem with new ones is that they are much softer and pit easily. This told to me by an auto glass company who has replace my Audi's windshield twice with original Audi glass. My wife's 4-Runner has a similar problem.

Is it softer glass or the fact we have more drivers running onto the side if the road kicking sand and rocks on our windshields at a rate we never saw before. As per the texters and phones bringing inattention and driving off to sides of road and our newer cars are closer to the road and that makes the windshield more vulnerable. I see more sand dimples than rocks and my windshield is not cracking when smacked by rocks. When I clay bar the windshield I get lots of dirt, sometimes more than the body of the car. What really is a pain, is the desiel soot/oil residue that tears up the wipers and streaks the screen and really needs a soaping to get off.
