Restoration Question

My question involves the alignment of the front fenders and where they bolt to the rocker panel. I have installed new rockers and floors. I now am bolting every thing back together to check alignment before paint. The problem is with the driver side fender I installed rust repair quarter section (large panel below seam) and now it meets the rocker 3/16 to ÂĽ lower then it should. The only solution I can come up with is to weld a 3/16 extension to the seam at the bottom of the rocker. Any other ideas?? FYI the passenger fender fits fine. The door gaps on the driver side are good and the molding forms a straight line front fender door and rear fender

Don't add a piece to the bottom of the rocker...look at how you welded the rocker to the unibody....its probably not level across the bottom & you'll probably have to break those welds & redo it.

That or take a plasma cutter to the lower part of the fender and shorten it. Either way it's a bunch of work. Did you use the screws to attach the lower edge of the fender? If so, and the door lines up, I'd go my way rather than attack the rocker.

Standing out away from the car, that way will show, Doc....that bottom rocker line should be perfectly straight & level front to rear....as it is, I'd bet the front end of his rocker kicks up...cutting the bottom of the fender would just follow that line.

Mebbe right, Tony. I'd have to be standin' beside the beast to really see what's up.

The other thing could be if he didn't join the fender repair section to the fender properly & left it a little "long"....either way, there's some redoing to do.

As a guess without seeing it i would think its the fender thats a problem. The molding line is good so i would also think Frank checked the gap at the door to rocker panel or would have mentioned that problem also. Its not going to be a easy fix if the fender bottom needs to be rebent or cut and welded. Repro parts.....ugh... Also is the whole fender too long or is is just at the rocker? If its the whole fender and you flex it up at the front then the opening behind the wheel will have too much of a curve to it. Good luck with the repair. Bob

How about some pictures of the problem Fad so you can get some definite answers.

Thank you all, I have checked the rocker it looks straight. I will compair the contour and length of the two front fenders. I was very carfull welding the patch panel to the upper part of the driver side fender, and it is a Heritage part (what ever that is worth). Will also try to post pix.

Hey Doc your welcome to come stand near the beast any time to see whats up!!!

Without seeing it, we're just stabbing in ther dark....look at the contour of the rocker itself to see if its fatter in front which would raise it.....when you replaced the rocker, did you do the entire side? & did you replace the inside membrane?

Tony thank for your interest, yes the entire side was changed the lower piece, inner membrane and rocker, I did this repair on both sides of the car.

Look at the 'curve' of the rocker on the other side & see if this side mirrors it or is different.
