restarting after six months

It’s been about 6 months since I last ran the TR3. I pulled the carbs when I temporarily put the tub back on and drained the gas out of them. I needed to hear it run again this year, so I re-rigged the temporary wiring and filled a can with gas only to find the primer bulb hoses had hardened to the point of leaking (my pump doesn’t have a primer lever). With a new bulb I was still unable to pump gas up to the clear filter near the carbs. After taking the bowl covers off, I found the float moved freely, but the check valve was gummed shut. After clearing and blowing through both, I still couldn’t get fuel to the clear filter so I removed the fuel pump. Hand pumping, it seemed to work fine, so I reinstalled it. Finally I was able to get gas to the filter, but the engine still wouldn’t start. By this point I had run my (6 year old TR6) battery dry 3 or 4 times with an overnight recharge. To this point it never even sputtered. I pulled the filters and noticed that when I pulled my choke linkage, it moved with resistance far enough to bump the idle up, but the jet on the bottom of my HS6s didn’t move at all. After cleaning both of those it fired up with barely a turn of the starter and ran like it did 6 months ago.

I assume I had 3 problems; 1)check valve stuck 2)fuel pump gummed up 3)jets clogged.
I added stabililizer to the fuel in the can. I am surprised how quickly and badly the emptied system became, and I wonder if there’s anything I could do for storage. I’m sure it will be at least another 6 months before the tub is painted and permanently back on.

Tex I'm surprised that no one has come to your rescue. I apologize but I would be no help. Mine is sitting there with nothing but oil squirted on all the appropriate parts. I've not done much to it for about 6 months due to health issues.
My New Years resolution is to get back in the harness with it. Even made up a list of things to do.
Hopefully one of the guys will come up with some answers for you.

Cheers, Tinkerman

Its surprising how one car can gum up quicker than others. The XKE will sputter and run rough in a month if I don't crank it routinely. The TR6 can set for 8/9 months and crank, then run smooth. This gas nowadays in hard on our LBC's. Best suggestion I can offer is run the gas out of the carbs when you know you are not going to run it again for a while. I've done my outboard motors that way for years. Even the stabilizer doesn't seem to help much these days.

Happy New year
