Replacment headlight rims

Has anyone changed the headlight bucket assemblys. If so what is the trick to getting those stupid *%#+ headlight rims on.

there is a spring clip on the bottom of the bucket. the rim hangs on the top and is pushed over the clip
 
Tis my understanding that there are two different buckets and rims. I know not which is which but the sizes are a bit different.
