Guys-
You've always been a tremendous help to a novice like myself. I've surprised myself on some of the things I've been able to fix. My next project is replacing the water pump on the 73 TR6. My question is, is it absolutely necessary to drain all coolant, as Bentley says? Can I get away with just pulling the pump, and then replacing the lost coolant? Or will this be a royal mess? Thanks for any advice.

I've actually done that before and I agree with Keoke that you will create a mess. You will have to dry up the area around the gasket to get a good seal, rinse off your engine to clean the mess and make sure the cat doesn't come into the garage until you have cleaned up all the antifreeze. Just lift the front of the car on jack stands (chock the back wheels if you are only going to use two jack stands) and loosen the lower radiator hose. With a large bucket you should be able to salvage all your coolant. May even be a good time to evaluate the color of your coolant and see if it doesn't need to be changed, especially if it is quite old.

I say "contain" the mess by draining everything.
Use this as an opportunity to properly flush the
cooling system. You will be surprised what come out.

You might not even add any total time to your project
since you have no great mess to clean up. New coolant
in a flushed system is an inexpensive peace of mind task.

Thanks, guys. I'll take your advice. Bill, you mentioned loosening the hose. Bentley also says to take out the drain plug on the block. Could I get away with just draining from the hose? Thanks.
 
For 4-cylinder TRs draining the radiator is enough to get coolant below the level of the pump... same for most cars.

But if you decide to change the coolant (and why wouldn't you for the fairly low cost of the stuff?) you would want to drain the block.
 
Loosen the lower hose on the radiator and all the fluid will drain (except the heater core).
