TR6 replacing U joints

I'm replacing the axle ujoints on my 74 TR6 and after pushing the ujoint from one side all the way, the pushed side u joint is not clear of axle and the other side is sticking out about 1/2" and doesn't want to come out with pliers. I was thinking of cutting the center of the joint to get it out. Anybody else run into this problem and come up with a fix?

No need to cut it. You need to pull the bearing cap off the 1/2" which is sticking out. Then press the u joint back in the opposite direction. You be able to then remove the opposite bearing cap. Then u joint body (aka spider) will be able to be removed.

Thanks, last time I did this I had a buddy with cutting torches and we cut out the spider to be able to knock out the caps. I probably need a better vise grip to pull it out.
