OK, I searched the back topics, and couldn't find any discussion replacing a stock steering wheel. I have my new wheel and hub, Is there anything tricky in getting the Original wheel off of the car?? Am I going to need some kind of puller, or can I gently "malletize" it to get it off of the splines? As always, any input is appreciated!!

Thanks!!

Chris

Chris: tiene un manual de mantenimiento como Bentley o Haynes?

the Bentley and Haynes have this procedure explained in detail. It is best to use a wheel puller?

I do have a Haynes Manual... I guess I should read it more closely!!

Gracias....

What wheel and hub will you be installing? Puller and correct socket...can't recall the size at the moment....are must haves.

Regards

It is a 15 inch leather wrapped wheel from Moss.... The less expensive brand, Tourist trophy I believe... I definitely have the right socket, and I have several pullers if need to use one.... Thanks!!

Chris-

For what it's worth, I've pulled 2 stock TR4 wheels off and didn't need a puller on either one. Might have just been lucky, but a little careful rubber mallet tapping and a gentle pull and they popped off.

Not sure about the tourist trophy hub, but don't be shocked if your horn starts misbehaving - I found with a moto lita hub I was accidentally grounding against the horn plate and had to move the steering column out slightly.

Thanks for the info... At least from Moss, I think they send the same Hub regardless of Which wheel brand ordered. So I will keep an eye out for any horn issues... My horn works only intermittently right now, So we will see!! Besides, here in NM, we are so laid back, we never use the horn anyway...

In case you do not know -- it is real easy to pull the wheel and top end of the column out of the car if you prefer to work on it on the bench. Just loosen the allen-head set-screw or alternately undo the 2 nut&bolts on the clamp with the set-screw (my preference) and the wheel and upper end of the column can be easily withdrawn.

Acually a little spooky how quickly you end up with the wheel in your lap so to speak.

Loosen the nut slightly. Find a willing assistant. Have him/her hold a suitable drift against the shaft (nut is still in place) and tap with hammer while you're sitting in the seat pulling on the wheel. It should come off easily.

NOTE: the threads on the nut and shaft are extremely fine and shallow; that's why you leave the nut on. I'm sure someone has the right tap and/or die to clean up any damage, but it's not a tap or die you're likely to find at the local Lowe's or True Value!

Thanks for all the input!! I was preparing to use the method in the you tube video, but I thought I would give it a little tug first... It popped right off! I have successfully R and R'd the steering wheel, and my horn even works now! (The new wheel came with a new "springy thing" so it is making better contact now...)

Thanks again for all the advice...

Next project, new Transmission tunnel.....
