Replacing Tail Light Assembly

I am having my '74 TR6 repainted and I think it will look brand new when it is complete. The fellow doing the work suggested that I replace the rear tail light assemblys since the trim around them is quite pitted. The only place I can find them online is Victoria British and they want $399 each? All I need is the chrome trim around the lights to look better. Does anyone know of a place that either just sells the piece that the chrome trim is on or another place that sells the complete unit a little cheaper?

Thank you

There are guys from the UK selling trim on eBay, or you could pick up a copy of Sports Car and Classics or similar from Barnes and Noble and order from one of the UK suppliers. Takes a bit longer to arrive, but prices can be much better.

The problem is that the piece you are referring to is not just a chrome trim piece but actually part of the entire base for the light assembly. The VB assemblies also include all new lenses. Also very improtant if your going for that 'brand new' look. BTW, NOS taillight assemblies and very good used ones go for top dollar on Ebay as well. Especially the left rear as it is usually more pitted than the right because of the location of the stock tail pipes.

If you are going to spend the money,my suggestion, be different and get the euro spec tailight ones. Be really cool I think.

I did that with the front of my car. Used euro marker lights and signals and then had a euro plate made to match my regular Colorado license plate. The rear is still all US though. Just make sure to check your local laws about what color your turn signals need to be. You don't want to be categorized with the Japanese Import crowd while driving your British Icon. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Personally I don't think the local law types would even notice.

I have found that it also depends upon the car and the driver. Colorado is a 'two plate state' and can be pretty picky about having the front plate on. Although most LBC owners seem to be able to go without it and not get hasseled.

My 'euro' front plate has recently just passed the scrutiny of one of the strictist traffic officers in town. I happened to pull in next to him at a gas station. He was inside paying and when he walked out he saw my front plate, walked all the way around the car and never said a word about the 'euro' plate. In fact, his only comment was, "nice car, what year is it?" My sister, who is also an officer, told me that if that officer let it go then I had nothing to worry about. I can't help but think that if I were 15 years younger and driving a pimped out Honda, his award book would have appeared.

So far my 'euro' plate has passed the scrutiny of the local officers, Sherriff department and the Colorado Highway Patrol. None of the encounters have resulted in awards/certificates either. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Have you looked into plating? Some shops do good work for a reasonable price.

I did the same thing. I found a place on-line that makes all types of European plates. I had one made to match the number and letter combo of my CO plate. I never have any problems with police at all.
