Replacing steering box seal

I just replaced the seal on my BN2 steering box. Have read about the problems getting the pitman arm off.

With the proper tool, I was able to get the arm off without moving or loosening the steering box at all. It just slipped into the joint from the wheel side & popped the arm right off.

The puller is Stahlwille #12616, code 71050000. See attached pic.

Nice to not have any leaks now.

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the tech tip. I know others have asked if this is possible (replace seal with box in car) so it's good to know it can be done!

I assume you didn't have to replace the steering box bushing?

What kind/weight of oil did you end up using for the steering box?

Cheers,
John

Hi John,
The bushing is nice & tight. Well lubed, as I kept filling the box as it slowly drained. I use SAE 80W90 GL4 gear oil. Nice to not have it self changing anymore. I also got a new seal for the idler, but it has never leaked yet.
Regards,
Dave
